The town began as a quarry on an old mission site and rapidly grew into a thriving agricultural community with tannery, flour mill, grocery store, post office and many other businesses. Today, there are only a few stores left in the town and much of its infrastructure has been replaced by vehicle ramps or developers' parking lots. In 1846 Governor Manuel Nieto issued an executive order creating Rancho Santiago de Santa Ana which included land near present-day San JuanCapistrano. Over time various families bought property adjoining El Cajon until it became one large village known as "San José" (town) because there were no streets or buildings constructed then. Sometime between 1946-1948 my maternal grandparents immigrated to America from Cuba aboard the SS Empire States ship Mayaguez under escort by US Coast Guard Captain John Doherty Jr.. They landed at Ellis Island on 9/15/46 disembarking all nine members of their family including my grandmother age 5 months pregnant with me! Our reunion happened during what I thought was going to be our final goodbye - but instead we hugged each other tightly for hours after Customs & Immigration processed our paperwork . ..We finally received word via telegram that we had made it safe & sound! After long delays due to World War II restrictions on immigration our family finally arrived safely in American Samoa about 10 weeks early!! It was like being reunited with your loved ones again after so many years away! There were many hardships faced by early settlers such as disease, poverty and crop failures however through hard work and determination these people transformed their towns into thriving communities today."
