The city of San Juan Capistrano, California was founded in 1821 by Captain José Joaquin de la Vega and his wife Juana Maria del Valle. The City of San Juan Capistrano became an incorporated municipality on July 9, 1882. The city is located in the southern portion of Los Angeles County and has a population of 97,000 as of 2010. It occupies a large area including parts of the cities of Lancaster and Compton. The climate here is warm year-round with average temperatures near 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). There are some severe cold snaps that occur sporadically throughout the year but they are generally short-lived. The city has a rich history dating back to its incorporation as part of Los Angeles County. Captain José Joaquin de la Vega's mission for the Spanish Empire in 1821 was to establish a route from Manila through Baja California to Sonora so that goods could be transported eastward into Mexico without being seized by the Mexican government. This mission was successful and he returned home with several thousand pesos in gold coins and other valuable treasures. He started construction on what would become known as La Encantada or 'The Golden Fortress'. La Encantada soon became an important military outpost due to its location at the mouth of Mission Creek which led directly into Tijuana Peninsula across from Culiacan Municipality on Baja California Sur. In 1846, during Mexican–American War, American General Stephen Kearny crossed over Isla de las Mujeres (Island Of Women) off Santa Ana Bay and marched up Mission Canyon towards Guerrero City while under cover of darkness with cannons firing blank cartridges so that no Mexicans would know what was happening! When Kearny reached Guerrero City he found it had been sacked by Mexican forces who took all their belongings, burned down most buildings including La Encantada, and dumped all this debris on Topaz beach where General Kearny's army landed! After weeks march his army destroyed much more than what had been taken during Vera Cruz Campaign but also lost many members which caused him great pain when he learned about it later! In 1847 Captain José Joaquín De la Vega established Presidio de San Juan Capistrano y el Reino Unido situado al pie del Monte Carmelo en una pequeña laguna cercana al río Río Carmelo actualmente denominada Laguna Verde; esta plaza fue declarada pública por Decreto Ley N° 794/1949 y implantó el sistema policial municipales fundado en 1926 con personal militar dispersando bandas criminales There have been many changes take place within San Juan Capistrano since its incorporation into Los Angeles County in 1982 including the growths in various sectors such as technology industry etc., although there continues to be strong community involvement throughout local government life The first post office opened at San JuanCapistrano on December 4th 1870 named Rancho Cucamonga after Major John Sutter who ran Colonel James Wolk’s adobe ranch west of town along today’s Main Street which spanned 3 square miles . On November 10th 1886 Postmaster General George Armstrong Smith dedicated new mail facility at current site then called Rancho Margarita after Mrs Margarita Dominguez whose husband Don Enrique Dominguez donated land for this purpose USPS moved out early 1990s before closure main street between Main Street & Pico Boulevard will remain boulevard name despite USPS move

The area that is now San Juan Capistrano was originally part of the Rancho Santa Ana de Tustin. In 1851, José María Cárdenas purchased the land from the Mexican government for $2,000. Cárdenas named his new rancho San Juan Capistrano after Saint John's Cross in Portugal. The first person to live on San Juan Capistrano was José Palomares, who arrived in 1857. The town of San Juan Capistrano grew up around the mission and monastery built there. The mission was abandoned in 1868, but some of its property still remains today.
