The San Juan Capistrano Marine Park, founded in 1961, is an important conservation area for the harbor seals and other marine animals of the Central Coast. The park offers a variety of attractions for visitors, including a NOAA Pier that provides access to research vessels, a lighthouse/marina combo with beautiful views of the harbor and its surroundings, an aquarium with sea lions and dolphins, shorebird nesting areas, and more. The history of San Juan Capistrano dates back to 1861 when Captain John Montgomery sailed his vessel "San Francisco" into the harbour to pick up supplies for his Explorers' Club expedition led by George W. Smith. TheCaptain's store at present-day Government House was built on this site in 1875 as part of their explorations. In 1887 Commodore George Dewey salvaged artifacts from the wreck of HMS Pompano which had been sunk by a storm off Point Reyes Peninsula. This event marked the beginning of a significant period in local history as these artifacts were housed at various locations until they were moved to Government House in 1961. In 1916 during World War I USS Constitution (CV-4) bombed San Juan Capistrano while searching for mines off Point Reyes National Seashore; following this attack the town began its efforts to redevelop after years of prohibitionism which lasted until 1938 In 1951 City Councilwoman Lena Aldridge spearheaded passage of city ordinance #1 creating San JuanCapistrano Harbor Marina Districts that would encompass all waterfront land southward from US 101 eastward including what is now Marine Park . On July 9th 1957 Mayor Don Deutch signed legislation creating Naval Air Station Miramar as part of Naval Air Station Kaneohe Bay . That same year also saw enactment and ratification by then Governor Goodwin Prosser (R)of Resolution No. 498 establishing County Parks Authorship within each county On October 2nd 1959 City Manager Harry Ahern created Municipal Court Administration Department which administers justice processes within Municipal Courts In 1963 Mayor Arturo Torres passed Act No. 138 Which established Harbor Districts composed solely outlying dry docks associated with naval activities only if approved by Planning Commission
