The United States Military deployed gift history in San Juan Capistrano, California on December 15th, 1898. The event was the banding of World War I veterans together for a Christmas party. The war had ended less than two months earlier and many of these veterans were discharged from their service. They needed a way to celebrate their new freedom. San Juan Capistrano is a small town in Southern California. The population was 10,000 at the 2000 census. It is located on the San Diego-Tijuana border and is about 20 minutes north of downtown San Diego. The first people to live in what is now San Juan Capistrano were the Tongva Indians. From here, they spread out among other Indian groups before moving into what is now Orange County in 1821. They built Mission San José de la Union on this site, which became a center of their community and culture. In 1846, Californios under General Mariano Vallejo surrendered Mexico City to Ulysses S. Grant as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As part of that treaty, California was divided between United States and Mexican states and San Juan Capistrano became a part of Tejon County under Mexican rule. After Mexican independence was granted in 1848, American settlers began to arrive from Southern California in significant numbers beginning in 1849. By 1860, there were over 2,000 Anglo-Americans living in the area including many farmers who had arrived after gold was found nearby at Sutter's Mill (now known as Scripps Ranch). The name "San Juan" came about because it was one day ride from Los Angeles along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH). At that time there was no such thing as Interstate 5 or State Highways; travelers simply took PCH all the way to Monterey Bay where they disembarked for various purposes such as fishing or exploring inland valleys before continuing their journey by boat down Salinas River toward Santa Barbara or Ventura counties via Carpinteria Pass near Pebble Beach or Oxnard beaches beyond Big Sur coastal communities like Montecito and Guerneville respectively when arriving back home late at night.). A post office called "Juanita" serving this district opened on October 15th 1870 with six mail slotters authorized by Postmaster General John Cranch Snider (). In 1795, San Juan Capistrano became a Spanish colonial town on the banks of the Santa Clara River. The town was founded by José Pasqual de Mena and his wife María Luisa Pico, who came from Cádiz, Spain. They arrived in 1795 and initialed themselves as "Juan Manuel pasquale Mena y Pico". The men started a small farm and then bought some land to build a larger house. In 1807 they had their first child, María del Carmen. They also began to worship at Nuestra Señora de la Concepción church which was built that year. In 1814 José Pasqualde Mena died and his widow married José Antonio Sanchez Gil. The Gil family resided in San Juan Capistrano until 1846 when they moved to Los Angeles County. In 1840 Francisco Rivera purchased some land east of the city limits of San Juan Capistrano from Don Antonio Guerrero for $2,000 dollars. He began building what would become known as the Rivera Mesa Preserve which is now part of Monterey Park park
