Military gift history in San Juan Capistrano, California began with the first military post in the area on July 8, 1846. The fortification of San Juan Capistrano was key to the defense of southern California during the Mexican-American War and subsequent Gold Rush. The original military garrison consisted of just a few soldiers and a detachment of artillerymen. After a yearlong siege by Mexican forces, the fort was taken by assault on October 15, 1846. With reinforcements arrived from Fort Yuma outside Tucson, Arizona, the garrison grew to about 350 men under command of Captain William Bancroft. The town's location at an important crossroads facilitated trade with both sides in the war and made it a strategic spot for Native American resistance against Spanish colonial rule. In 1849, Major General Antonio López de Santa Anna ordered all Uto-Aztecan Indians living within five miles (8 km) of Presidio San Juan Capistrano to disarm or be deported. Many local Native Americans chose to fight against Spanish colonialism rather than submit to extermination. As part of their Resistancemovement, some volunteers formed militias known as "Juan Grifo" (JohnGriffin) because they wore gray uniforms like those worn by Mexican Army troops. On December 5, 1850, Commodore John Copley sailed his ship USS Constitution into harbor at San Juan Capistrano after arriving from Hong Kong with supplies for Mexico's army fighting in Texas against United States forces under President James K Polk. Commodore Copley brought over more than 1 million pounds (453 kg) of British goods including flour and munitions for Mexicos' indigenous allies who were besieged inside Texas by Ulysses S Grant's American forces under General Crook during the Alamo campaign that ended February 14,1851. In response to Commodore Copleys arrival and ensuing tradeGoods importation during these years totaled over $2 million), Governor Manuel Michelin decided to build a military post here instead of farther north near today's downtown Los Angeles due to concerns about Anglo-American intentions towards Mexico City following Polk’s conquest of Mexico in 1848 while Californias political boundaries were still fluidly defined. The first building erected at this site was an adobe barracks called Fort Yuma which served as headquarters for Rancho Aguirre until 1865 when it became Headquarters Battalion #1 for Cavalry Regiment #5 stationed here until 1912 when it became Headquarters Battalion #2; finally becoming Headquarters Battalion #3 on January 1st 1915 before reverting back again to Headquarters Battalion #1 on September 30th 1916.)
