The National Guard of San Juan Capistrano, California was organized on May 27, 1915. The first unit to be activated was the Fifth Regiment of Infantry. It served in World War I and the Mexican-American War. In 1922, the Seventh Regiment of Infantry was activated and served until 1949. On November 5, 1951, the Ninth Regiment of Infantry was activated and served until 1959. In 1966, an act by then Governor Ronald Reagan authorized the formation of a state guard battalion for San Juan Capistrano County. The battalion was named after General John J. Pershing who had been Medal of Honor recipient for his role in World War I and Mexican-American War campaigns as Commanding General United States Forces in Mexico City Sector. The battalion served from 1968 until 1970 when it disbanded due to budgetary concerns associated with military deployments across country at this time. On October 15, 1979, an act by then Governor George Deukmejian authorized the activation and organization of a new National Guard unit stationed at Chapultepec Army Airfield in downtown San Juan Capistrano under command of First Lieutenant Colonel Alvaro Moreno Valdez Jr.. This unit became known as "The Brave New Warriors" because it constituted one percent (1%) of all active duty military personnel assigned to that airfield at that time; there were no other units permanently stationed there aside from the marines present during peacetime operations only For security reasons no firearms or ammunition could be handled on site without prior written approval from commanding officer which would usually take place during non-military hours when available Officers were not subject to immediate deployment home sick or on call for any other reason . The unit initially consisted onlyof reservists but over time more recruits were called up including many high school students who had never before seen combat service outside their home states . The unit made its first real contribution to defense during Operation Desert Storm when ground troops arrived at Chapultepec Army Airfield early on February 18th 1991 just days before hostilities began .
