The San Juan Capistrano Naval Air Station is one of the most important naval air stations in the United States. It has been a part of the Department of Defense for over sixty years and is currently used by Navy SEALs, Marine Corps Special Operations Forces, and Coast Guard units. The station provides essential infrastructure and capabilities to support Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Inherent Resolve operations. Navy SEALs are one of the many specialty units that use the San Juan Capistrano Naval Air Station. The squadron was first activated at NAS San Juan in 1951 as an Aeronautical Maintenance Unit (AMU). After more than fifty years of service, it was redesignated as a Naval Aviation Unit on 1 July 2010. The squadron is commanded by Commodore Ronald Ladd with Lieutenant Commander Joshua Condon serving as Squadron Commandant. As part of this effort Navy personnel provided leadership and support for approximately 350 Warriors from all Service branches who participated in various programs such as survival skills training; physical fitness testing; job search assistance; housing assistance; health clinics; school system visits etc... The primary missionof this program was to provide transition services which would allow these service members to live successful lives after their leave from military service

The first permanent settlement in what is now San Juan Capistrano was made by Father Junipero Serra and his followers in 1769. The Mission Santa Ana de la Encarnación, located on a small hill overlooking the present day town, was founded in 1772 by Father José Ortega y Gasset. From its inception the mission served as a center for religious instruction and socialization for Catholic residents of coastal Orange County. In 1821 Mexico gained control over California and Santa Ana became part of Mexican territory. With new land being acquired in what is now Riverside County, it seemed inevitable that a new mission would be established there. In 1825 Don José Antonio Reyes y Montoya, founder and captain general of Alta California Battalion (the precursor to today’s Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department), purchased 3,852 acres (1,500 hectares) along the coast from Isidro Carrillo de los Padres for $5 per acre ($10 per hectare). Reyes soon realized that this vast tract had potential as an agricultural resource and began working on plans to establish a missionsite here.
