The San Juan Capistrano Naval Militia was founded in 1847 at the request of Commodore George Dewey and Admiral David Dixon Porter. The militia served as a protectorate of the port against pirates. In 1892, the navy established a naval air station at San Juan Capistrano to provide cover for other navy activities in the area. When World War I began, the navy increased their presence in San Juan Capistrano, and by 1918 there were 11 sailors stationed here. The war ended with Japan's surrender, and after that San Juan Capistrano became an American colony. In 1938, the military base was closed down and all naval personnel were reassigned to NAS El Centro (now part of California State University). By 1942 there were only six sailors left here; however, during World War II they operated two submarines from this base until 1945 when it was decommissioned. Afterward there wasn't much done with this base until it reopened as SANJUAN CAPISTRANO NATIONAL AIRPORT in 1978. Since then many different things have happened to this city including being used as a backdrop for movies such as "Ender's Game" and "The Island"; being host to various international events; and now becoming home to NAS SANJUAN CAPISTRANO NAVAL BASE which houses both Navy ships and Marine Corps units. This paper will explore some of these history-related topics but also look into what has been done with the Naval Base since its reopening thirty years ago!

San Juan Capistrano (Spanish: San Juan de la Cruz) is a city in the County of Santa Barbara, California, United States. The population was 207 at the 2010 census. It is located on the coast of Santa Barbara County. The name means "sanctuary from the sea." The first Europeans to visit what is now San Juan Capistrano were members of the Morro Bay Company and their vessel, Narvaez, on November 21, 1769. They naming it "Naranja" after one of their crewmen who collected wild grapes from Mission Santa Clara de Asís in Northern Spain. Captain James Cook also visited San Juan on December 11th 1770 while exploring parts of California for British Columbia Company. On September 3rd 1821, a group led by Father Junípero Serra landed at Nuestra Señora del Carmen beach and founded Mission San José de Alcántara (now part of downtown), which would become one of the most important missions in Californias history. In 1835, when Mexico became an empire under Antonio López de Santa Anna following its war with Texas over independence, Governor Alvarado ordered all Mexican citizens to leave inlandSanta Barbara County until his order could be carried out properly. A few people remained behind to farm while stores went up and down State Street during this time; but noone can remember how or when the town square got its present look and shape In 1840s some government land was acquired nearby for military use so that later much of what is now downtown was built as barracks for soldiers garrisoned there during World War I-1918 After World War II many Mexicans returned and various businesses came back such as Tony's Bakery which still exists today In 1950s new housing development started called Rancho Cucamonga with many high schools being built soon afterwards including John F Kennedy High School which opened in 1957 . Many subdivisions have been built since then such as Thousand Oaks , Northridge , Pompano Beach etc.. Today more than 80% of populace are Hispanic making it one of most diverse cities in America

It was on May 1, 1821 that San Juan Capistrano became a part of California. The site for the future town had been surveyed by Lt. Manuel Nieto and Capt. José Barrientos in 1810 and it was not until 1819 that permanent settlements were made and the first post office was established at San Juan Capistrano. In 1836, the name of the town changed to its current form, San Juan Capistrano, after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna's victory at Palo Alto over Mexican forces. The town (and county) grew rapidly throughout the 1850s due to immigration from all over Mexico and Central America, as well as construction of railroads which brought goods and people to San JuanCapistrano. The early 20th century saw an increasingly diversified economy with various businesses including grocers, tailors, bankers, physicians, dentists and others emerging along with new residents who founded churches and civic organizations such as baseball leagues and football clubs. One of the most significant events in this time period was World War II when many local citizens served in military units such as the 101st Airborne Division which played a pivotal role in Nazi Germany's Invasion of Europe. Afterward, much growth slowed down as jobs moved away from agriculture into more centralized industries; however, some new businesses began to spring up during this time such as a hospital (the present day Kaiser Permanente Hospital), libraries (the present day University Library), grocery stores (anchor supermarkets like Safeway) and other services typical of suburban areas today. The first European to sight the San Juan Capistrano Peninsula was Jesus Christ, who landed on the peninsula in 1719. The Spanish mission system began on the peninsula in 1769 and continued until 1821. The mission of San Jose de la Laguna was founded in 1797, while Mission Santa Cruz became a full-time Mexican missions station in 1821. The military occupation of California by Mexico lasted from 1846 to 1855, during which time most of the peninsula was held by Mexicano forces. After their withdrawal, American troops occupied much of the peninsula before returning it to Mexico in1857.
