San Juan Capistrano is a small, agricultural town located in Orange County, California. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. The name "Capistrano" comes from Spanish and means "Island of the Crosses." The first permanent European settlement in what is now Orange County was made by Huguenots who came overland from France in 1602. They set up a mission on an island in San Mateo Creek, about two miles east of present-day Capistrano. Some years later they moved their mission to what is now downtown Capistrano and founded the first post office there. The original Mission Indians were forced out during the Mexican Revolution, but they soon returned and resumed farming and trading with Mexicans and Europeans. In 1821 Mexico gained independence from Spain, and as part of that process Santa Ana became the new county seat. In 1827 San Juan Capistrano became one of many villages incorporated into newly organized Orange County. In 1853 President Franklin D. Roosevelt sent General John Custer to lead Ulysses S Grant's advance through Orange County during his campaign for president; Custer's raid near Rancho Niguel destroyed some importantqv Mormon settlements there on December 29th, 1869 (the so-called Massacre). But little is known about the history of this small community located on the southernmost tip of San Diego County. When Spanish explorers first invaded America, they discovered an uninhabited island in the Inland Sea. They named it San Juan Capistrano after Saint John's Cross, their patron saint. The town grew up aroundño or saltworks that were established on this island during the 18th century. San JuanCapistrano was founded by Father José de la Peña in 1795 as a mission station for Catholic bishops in what is now Orange County. By 1800, it had become a small village with 150 residents. It prospered thanks to its location and good resources until 1836 when Mexican Americans took over most of Southern California and sacked San Juan Capistrano for lack of tribute from Mexico. In 1846, American soldiers under General Winfield Scott destroyed part of Mexico City during the Mexican-American War and captured more than 2,000 prisoners including many priests who were sent to Arizona as nuncios (resident diplomats). Many Catholics were imprisoned because they could not be forced into service against their will. On December 12, 1846, Pope Pius IX issued his bull Cum Romanis Ecclesiae: "All men are created equal" which led to political freedom for all races in America including Catholics. In 1861, following US Civil War victory over Mexico at Palo Alto Bridge, San Juan Capistrano became part of newly formed Imperial County comprising what is now both Orange County and Riverside County. The population reached 476 by 1880 but declined due to various factors such as disease brought over from Mexico; heavy industry; railroad construction; military activity; World War I; and Prohibition (Prohibition was passed in 1919). However resurrected interest around 1980 led to new development along Marine Drive called "Cabo Point". Today while some portions have been redeveloped into mixed use buildings/ suburban sprawl while others still maintain agriculture there are still large parcels undeveloped which make up much of town center site that remains natural giving hope future developers may choose to include a plaza or park here
