The city was named after Saint John the Baptist, who is considered the Patron saint of San Juan Capistrano. The City Council voted to change the name to San Juan Capistrano on December 14, 1949. The original name refers to St. John's Day and it is not a Spanish word meaning "Sanctuary." In 1876, Don Jose Antonio Peña donated land for a new courthouse and jail in San Juan Capistrano. The first courthouse was built at the corner of Paseo del Rio and Avenida de las Flores. In 1907, a law library and school were built on Capitol Hill Drive in downtown San Juan Capistrano. These buildings still stand today as part of the University of California - Santa Cruz campus. In 1916, an additional jail was built on Congress Avenue South near East Broadway Street in downtown San Juan Capistrano; this building served as both the old district attorney's office and court house until 1978 when it became known as the County Courthouse Annex Building. In 1924, Normal School opened its doors in downtown San JuanCapistrano with instruction for girls only until 1938 when boys also began enrolling at Normal School (now USD). In 1940-1941, work started on what is now called "the Cathedral" which would become home to both local parish churches and eventually be used as a state capitol building during Junta Delegada proceedings from 1950-1951. A fire destroyed most of downtownSan juancapristrno on November 17th 1944; however due to quick response from firefighters many structures sustained damage including: 2 banks (one north & one south), 3 insurance companies (two east side & two west side), 1 post office (& their annexe), 2 movie theaters (& their annexes) & numerous other businesses located throughout town center which included: general store(s), bakery(s), blacksmith shop(s), photographer’s studio(s), doctor’s office(& his annexe) & more!
