San Leandro, California is a city in East Bay County, California, United States. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It has been the fastest-growing city in the San Francisco Bay Area since 2000. The name of San Leandro comes from Spanish Mission San Lorenzo de Alcalá and English "little league." The European settlement of Contra Costa County began with the building of Mission San Antonio del Norte by Father Junípero Serra on October 26, 1772. The mission was abandoned in 1821 after earthquakes destroyed part of it. A half century later, Governor Manuel Nieto authorized the founding of a new mission by John Coston on December 12, 1825 because there were no more missions in Contra Costa County. The town site for this new mission was located between what is now Hayward and Livermore Streets and just east of present day Oakland University Boulevard. In 1828 an act called An Act to Suppress Unlawful Assemblies was passed that banned all religious assemblies within one mile (1 kilometer) of any public office or within two miles (4 kilometers) of any schoolhouse; including meetings held inside churches or other buildings dedicated to God. In 1842 James Hogg set up shop as a saddlery contractor near what is now downtown San Leandro before opening his first storeroom on Second Street in 1844. By 1850 Hogg's business had grown into what is now known as Hogg's Store Inc., one of America's oldest department stores still operating today (it opened its doors on May 15, 1851). Other early businesses included Jephson Bros.' sawmill and blacksmith shop on El Sobrante Creek near Donner Lake; Wm Shields' grocery store at Fourth Street and Center Avenue; Peddle & Taylor's flour mill on Dunder Mifflin Street south off Telegraph Avenue; Folsom Brothers bakery at Ninth Street and Broadway; Wm Gorman's carriage garage across from City Hall
The first permanent European settlement in San Leandro was by the French in 1776. The area became part of Alameda County in 1853. The city was incorporated on March 15, 1868, as the City of San Leandro.
