The San Leandro Army National Guard's history in the city goes back to 1881. The unit was organized as a part of the California Militia and Volunteer Force on December 1, 1881. It was redesignated as the San Leandro Regiment, Infantry on July 1, 1899. In 1906 it was reorganized again and became the 1st Battalion, 9th Regiment Infantry (later 2nd Battalion) on October 1, 1906. On September 15, 1917 it was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion (9th Regiment), 8th Brigade Combat Team Infantry of the United StatesArmy Reserve for service in World War I. The battalion served in France from November 1918 until May 1919. As part of the United States Army Reserve's demobilization process it reverted to its original name on June 30, 1920.
San Leandro, CA is a city in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 497,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in Northern California after San Francisco and the third most populous city in Bay Area of Northern California behind San Jose and Oakland. The City of Hayward also falls within its boundaries. The original inhabitants of what is now known as San Leandro were Ohlone Indians who lived on the eastern side of Santa Clara River Valley. In 1853, Rancho San Antonio de las Pulgas was sold to Spain by Juan Bautista Alvarado for $22,500 In 1868, John Sutter founded Sutter's Mill on the east bank of the Santa Clara River opposite modern day San Leandro Crossing. This mill became one of America's earliest commercial centers with products such as flour, butter and cheese exported to Europe. A year later, Sutter sold his interest in the mill to James Wolkentin for $22500 In 1906, Robert Haggerty constructed a small dam on Coyote Creek which formed present-day Lakeshore Boulevard near downtown San Leandro Haggerty began selling water rights from this pond to local businesses and proposed naming the creek after him – Haggerty Park would become one of downtown's first streets. In 1912–13 construction began on what is now Calaveras High School (nowPartners High School). The school was funded by Haggerty's brother-in-law Jock Mahoney through his company Wolkentin Mines & Water Company.Mahoney offered free land to anyone who could build a school that could seat 400 students; 300 students were built and opened in 1913 by Pemberton Realty Co., Inc.. In 1922 when it became part of Berkeley Unified School District it became Berkeley High School (now UC Berkeley), but retains its Japanese name (Sapphire Lake Kanto High School) until today...the park has been home to various types of sports teams throughout its history including baseball diamonds used during World War II as an airfield

In the early 1800s, San Leandro was a small farming community located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The area now known as San Leandro became part of Alameda County in 1856 and was incorporated as a city in 1903. The population of San Leandro peaked at over 20,000 in the 1920s but has since decline significantly. Today, the city is home to 6,500 residents and is considered an inner-city suburb of San Francisco. San Leandro's rich history can be traced back to its beginnings as a small agricultural community. In 1835, Juan José Arguelles founded a farmstead called Argüello near what is now Fourth Street and Market Street in what is now downtown San Leandro. For many years, this land was used for dairy operations by Arguelles' family and his friends. In 1849, John Cranch purchased land near present-day Third Street and Market Avenue from Juan José Arguelles for $3 per acre. This purchase marked the beginning of what would become one of the most important cotton fields in California. The development of cotton production allowed for significant growth within the town during the late 1800s and early 1900s. Many businesses were established throughout these years including mills that manufactured goods such as textiles, shoes, clothing and other household items. Additionally, several churches were built during this time including St Anthony's Catholic Church which still stands today and helped lead to increased religious activity within San Leandro during this time period. In 1847, the town of San Leandro was organized and named for General Mariano Santa Anna. The first post office was established in San Leandro on July 1, 1847. In 1851, the California State Legislature granted land to the Town of San Leandro for a public square and schoolhouse. On May 15, 1862, San Francisco Chronicle columnist Wm. H. Horner described what he called "the most important development" in the history of San Francisco when he said: "The City ofSan Francisco is getting larger every day; it now includes about half the territory of Oakland." On November 17, 1871, San Francisco Mayor James Phelan ordered that all houses within san francisco's limits be demolished to make way for an elevated railway line which would link downtown with Stockton through San Jose and Fremont. The demolition began on December 5th and finished on January 14th, 1872. On October 15th 1870 Alameda County Commissioners voted 2-1 to annex Rancho Rinconada east of present-day Pinole offshoot villageinity - this annexation created unincorporated areas located east or southeast of Hayward including Hercules Oaks West (now part of Pleasanton), Menlo Park south to Marineland Boulevard (now El Sobrante) and much of northeastern Contra Costa County including Milpitas
