The San Leandro Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and emergency services to the community since 1872. The Coast Guard's mission is to keep our coast safe, protect our people and property, and respond to emergencies. In 1957, the Coast Guard decided to establish a coast guard station in San Leandro. Today, we have a station with a full-time staffing of 11 officers and 2 sailors. Our primary mission is public safety; however, we also provide assistance during events such as hurricanes or earthquakes. The first Coast Guard station inSanLeandro was built on land that had been used by the Indian tribe of Siskiyou for hunting and fishing purposes. In 1872, Captain John Sloat donated his land at Point Conception for use by the United States Coast Guards as an anchorage for vessels in the Bay of Yerba Buena area. On September 8th 1870, Acting Commandant James Wintney ordered two schooners (the brigantine USS Constitution) moored at anchor near Point Conception when he learned of reports of pirates operating off shore in that area. At 1pm on September 9th 1870 three men were observed walking alongshore towards one of the schooners which they boarded and took into custody without resistance. After being questioned about their activities ashore this group was released without charge but it soon became apparent that these men were not from within the United States because they could not speak English fluently - thus establishing American identity onshore during this time period! This initial contact with U.S.-born citizens may have helped lead to later cooperation between U.S.-based law enforcement agencies onshore including those now known as BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit). In 1907-1908 Captain James Biddle supervised construction of what is now called "Majestic" which served as Headquarters for both Naval Districts Bay Area and Northern California before moving back to San Francisco in 1909 prior to its permanent installation at Treasure Island beginning operations on January 1st 1910 under Commander Augustus Earle Condon with jurisdiction over all waters west of latitude 39° north! From 1911-1915 Commander Nicholas Jorgenson implemented new security measures aboard "Majestic" including steaming patrols off Alameda Head from October 1913 until November 1914 when he relinquished command due to ill health; however Majestic continued operation until February 1915 when she collided with another ship while conducting surveillance duties offshore off Weems Head shortly after midnight en route from Oakland Monthly Harbor! During World War II Commodore George Dewey replaced Nicholas Jorgenson as commanding officer aboard "Majestic" until her decommissioning following hostilities in 1944 beachhead operations against Japan!

The San Leandro Coast Guard Museum is one of the first Coast Guard museums in California. The museum was founded in 1923 and has been housed at the former Coast Guard Station on Point Reyes Boulevard in San Leandro. In 2006, the Museum moved to its current location, which is a maritime-themed building on Richardson Street in downtown San Leandro.
In 1849, San Leandro was founded as a small trading post on the southern end of Alameda Bay. It soon became an important port for goods arriving from the East and from Asia. The town grew rapidly and by 1868 it had over 6,000 residents. In 1886, San Leandro became the first city in California to be incorporated as a dry county. Growth continued until the early 20th century when many of San Leandro's businesses were destroyed in the Depression. Afterward, growth resumed and todaySan Leandro is one of the most diverse cities in California with over 100,000 residents who are ethnically diverse and multicultural. The city has a rich history dating back to its founding which can be found through its numerous museums, monuments and other historical landmarks such as the USS Constitution Museum which is located on Fort Point at Fisherman's Wharf. In 1851, a group of business owners in San Leandro founded the first brewery in California. The first beer brewed in San Leandro was called "San Leandro Ale". In 1872, the business became known as the San Francisco Brewing Company and began marketing its products statewide. By 1901, the company had become well-known throughout California. In 1923, the company merged with Josephine Brewing Co. to form Josephine & Sons Brewery. The company produced both light and dark ales until it closed its doors in 1988.
On December 12, 1847, the first public school in San Leandro was opened by Reverend George W. Smith. It was located on a piece of land that is now part of the city limits. The school served students from one-third of San Leandro until 1860 when it moved to what is now Hillcrest Elementary School. In 1906, the San Leandro City Council voted to build a new school on Raymond Street and within two years had completed construction of what is now El Centro High School. In 1916, San Leandro voters approved an $18,000 bond issue to build a new high school which would become Pacific High School. On October 14, 1922, Pacific High School was dedicated and became the first all-girl high school in California.
