Coffee has been enjoyed by people in San Leandro, California for centuries. The first coffeehouses were established in this city in the 1820s, and the first Starbucks opened in 1971. Today, there are over a dozen coffee shops and cafes located throughout the city. Each of these establishments offers different flavors of coffee and pastries, as well as views of downtown San Leandro. One of the earliest coffeehouses was The Coffee House on Market Street, which was established in 1820. This business was known for its quality cups of joe and its wide variety of pastries. In 1827, The Coffee House moved to what is now the corner of Market and El Camino Real Streets. At this location, they offered roasts from all over Europe as well as American-made goods such as eggs, bacon, ham, and toast. The Coffee House closed its doors in 1829 but reopened under new management soon afterwards. For many years after their closure (1829-1850), The Coffee House managed by various owners before coming into ownership by John Sutter in 1850. Sutter renamed it The National Brewery and Brew house at 9th & Mission Streets which continued operations until 1954 when it became an open air movie theater called Regal Cinemas San Leandro Bay Area 4D/IMAX/. In 1961-1962 Sam Adams Brewing Company leased space at 9th & Mission Streets from The National Brewery and Brew house which eventually became Sam Adams Brewery Park with three stories including a brewery on top that served craft beer (now Fisherman’s Wharf) until 1984 when it closed down due to economic decline however parts were restored to their original condition between 1986-1994 by local community members who named themselves “Sam Adams restorationists” In 2003 Stanford University renovated ground floor spaces at 9th &Mission Streets into a research lab known as CUHK Institute for Mathematical Sciences called “Stanford Institute for Mathematical Sciences – IMS” It is still operating today with new building construction ongoing

San Leandro is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 21,787 at the 2010 census. It is the tenth-largest city in California. The name of San Leandro may be derived from Spanish meaning "the place where lions live". In 1849, two brothers by the name of Laguna and Santana bought a Rancho San Pablo from Mexican landholders in what is now East Oakland. They named their new rancho after Saint Lawrence of Assisi who had been born there in 1227 A.D.. In 1852, they sold the rancho to Jedediah Smith for $600. At that time it was one of the most northerly points on California's coast. In 1872, John Sutter became interested in controlling part of this coastline which he called fertile land for his cattle and found oil shale near Point Reyes National Seashore during his exploratory trip along the coast under lease from eccentric millionaire Eli Whitney Sr.. He leased 2/3rds of San Leandro Bay to John Dibble for $500 per year with exclusive rights to drill wells up to 500 feet deep and 6 miles outside shoreline). On July 9th 1870 US Army Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer discovered an unknown mineral deposit while leading his troops into battle against Sioux Indians on Black Hills Ridge north of present day Hayward CA
On October 20, 1847, San Leandro was founded by the Pioneer Party of California. The town was named after Major General James K. Polk and General José María de Santa Clara, who led the party that explored and mapped the California Gold Rush in 1846-48.
