However, it wasn't until 1776 that Englishman James Cook discovered North America when he sailed down the Pacific coast from Hawaii via Cape Horn. With newfound land to explore lying between Asia and Europe, Missionaries arrived in coastal Californias such as Monterey Bay in 1821 looking for people who could convert them to Christianity. The Search for a Red Sea resulted in only four converts being baptized in all of California before Father José Valdez led an unsuccessful mission into central Baja California Province in 1826-27 seeking confirmation from God's word rather than empirical evidence alone that there were any living true prophets or apostles among those living inlandward beyond Mexico City proper (Baja California). Despite this failure On July 26th 1830—just three years after Cook's landfall—Father Miguel Castro joined Father Valdez aboard Pilar del Castillo during their second attempt ashore at Ushuaia Cove within sight of Point Conception Island where they expected to find whales; however no signs appeared until September 8th 1830 when they observed shoals consisting principally (>75%) sperm whales off Santa Cruz Island southwest cape Jones Head light bearing position about latitude 43 degrees longitude W less than two degrees south declination....."
