San Leandro is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 76,521 according to the 2010 census. In 1851, when Contra Costa County was formed, part of it included what is now San Leandro east of Yerba Buena Island; so incorporation took place there on February 2, 1852. As early as 1800 people had landed along shorelines near Point Reyes National Seashore due to shipwrecks which created openings for establishment downwind but also raised hazards with rockslides. By 1827 whaling ships had come ashore bringing passengers and supplies up the bay to Point Reyes where they could be unloaded ontoshore before sailing back out again carrying more cargo or sailors fresh off their voyages around Cape Horn-the only stop for English navigators on their way to Asia . A small community gradually developed around this whaling port with names such as Hollister Cove, Pismo Beach and Drakes Harbor until about 1840 when word spread among fishermen that a fine bed of pickled peppers could be found offshore at Bransfield’s Wharf called “Dutch Flat” because its dried up during heavy rains upstream..
