The first coffeehouse in San Leandro was opened in 1842 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte and his brother, Antoine. The business flourished until 1853 when a fire destroyed the building. In 1893, Jules Chabot started the first grocery store in San Leandro and soon after began selling coffee beans from his warehouse located on First Street between Cedar and Clay Streets. In 1895, he moved his store to Fourth Street between Cedar and Clay Streets where it stayed until 1924 when it closed due to poor health reasons. In 1912, Harry Kipperman established the first gas station in San Leandro with three barrels of oil per day capacity at 10 cents pergallon gasoline. He sold gasoline at four dollars a gallon which led to him becoming one of the wealthiest men in California at that time. Kipperman's store continued to sell gasoline until 1954 when it closed due to changes in regulations governing fuel sales within California's state government entities. In 1960, Donelson's Department Store opened its doors on Contra Costa Boulevard adjacent to Pacific unloading dock No. 1 serving as the only viable outlet for local groceries during that period with no other commercial establishment nearby catering specifically to this market niche outside of small family businesses catering primarily to their customers picking up fresh produce straight from their fields or yards after sunset.)Donelson's eventually became known as one of San Leandro’s largest department stores having over 200 employees at its peak stock more than any other business within town limits aside from perhaps downtownSanLeandro’s post-war expansion brought Safeway into town by way of Claremont Avenue just east of downtown along with numerous smaller independent merchants including several banks also setting up operations along Claremont Avenue during that time)

Today much of that shipbuilding activity is concentrated at Pier 40 near its original location on Contra Costa County shoreline - but there are also several heavy industry plants scattered throughout downtown including Alcoa Metal Manufacturing Company manufacturing aluminum cans and other products from ore mined near El Sobrante .
