WWII: The beginning In 1939, when World War II began, America had only 10 thousand soldiers stationed on Guam. America's entry into World War II was based on a need for weapons that could protect her citizens from potential enemies at home and abroad; Japan posed this threat especially given her recent aggression in China. After months of study by Navy officers at Pearl Harbor Naval Base (now known as Honolulu), Congress approved $10 million for procurement of ships capable of carrying marines – the first active military deployment in American history On December 8th 1941 USS Saratoga sailed into Pearl Harbor with 3 companies ( company A being led by Captain James Wickersham) assigned aboard as part of Destroyer Squadron 6 commanded by Rear Admiral Chester Nimitz . There were no planes or submarines available to cover or interfere with this dramatic event- it was just a navy demonstration before hostilities started! One year later on December 7th 1942 USS Lexington sank Japanese forces off Guadalcanal after hitting them with 5 torpedoes from HMS Jupiter! This was followed five days later by USS Santa Fe sinking another Imperial Japanese Navy ship off Samar Island! It was during this time that enrollment for marine recruit training for service in WWII exploded from 100 applications per week to 2 thousand per month! By October 1944 there were 6000 recruits ready for duty overseas!!!
