The history of San Leandro goes back to 1795 when Spanish missionaries founded Mission Santa Clara de Asís on current-day Benicia Street in what is now downtown San Leandro. The first post office in town was established in 1857, but there were no residents until 1870 when Commodore John Doolittle built Fort Point on present-day Pier 36 near Market Street. This fort served as headquarters for various military campaigns against Native Americans throughout California. In 1876,Alameda County was created from parts of Contra Costa and Alameda Counties with San Leandro being given portions east of Highway 12 along Marina Boulevard where they currently stand today including most of what is now Piedmont Park Drive (formerly Beach Boulevard). In 1912, City Council voted to rename itself “San Leandro” after then-Mayor James Jardine who had sponsored legislation creating the city limits that day on behalf of Mayor George Wickersham (D). At that time there were only 10 men living in town; all but two died within a few years due to various causes such as tuberculosis or accidents caused by mining operations nearby which took away jobs from local citizensfolkrewithout giving them any say about their future or even their final resting place! In 1847, the town of San Leandro was founded on the eastern shore of Lake Merritt. It was named for Saint Leander, who had been martyred in a single night in 449 A.D. The city's initial population consisted of about 60 families and 10 churches. By 1853, San Leandro had grown to 1,500 residents and 12 businesses. By 1870, it had reached 3,000 residents and 30 businesses. In 1872, the first post office was established in San Leandro. From its inception until 1978, San Leandro served as the county seat for Alameda County. The City of San Leandro continued to serve as the primary municipal center for both Alameda County and Contra Costa County until 1984 when they were merged into one municipality. Alameda County became part of California on January 27th 1850 following the admission of California into United States as a result of the Mexican-American War (1846-48). On February 14th 1850, District No. 2 (San Francisco) was created within Alameda County along with portions of Contra Costa and Marin counties. District No. 2 included all or parts of nine towns: Dublin Bayou; Golden Gate Park; Harrisonburg; Hillcrest; Livermore; Newark Bayou; Oakland hills; Potrero Hill; Richmond Heights and Sleepy Hollow Canyonlands parkland east of Interstate 580 between MacArthur Boulevard/I-580 exit 17A northbound/exit 17B southbound (now I-880/880/880E). On May 15th 1850 District No. 2 was renamed Alameda County after previous county seat Santiago de Chile which lay within Rancho Tehama de Anza northwest of what is now Fremont Street in Hayward Municipal Center - an area that would become East Palo Alto beginning in 1860s The costal boundary between Marin County to the south and Contra Costa Counties to the north changed several times over this period due to annexation by other counties including but not limited to: Solano (1858), Portola Valley (1865), North Vallejo (1912), Menlo Park (1937)
The first San Leandro settlement was made in 1795 by Jose Francisco de la Cruz and his wife, María del Carmen y Blanco. La Cruz began to homestead land on the eastern side of San Francisco Bay. In 1825, John Butterfield founded the California Gold Rush and started trading goods with the area. The town of San Leandro was built in 1829 as a result of this trade. The town became a major commercial center after railroads arrived in the area.
