The San Leandro Naval Shipyard was founded in 1885 and has been responsible forbuilding a variety of ships for the US Navy. The yard is home to the USS Constitution (1893), USS Lexington (1912), USS Enterprise (1941), USS Hornet (1991) and USS John F Kennedy Presidential yacht, among many others. In 1984, the navy gift history of San Leandro was studied by historian Timothy L. Garton Ash in his book "Shipbuilders of America: A History of United States Naval Shipbuilding". One of the most important aspects of navy ship building was the transfer of technology from commercial shipyards to naval yards. This process began with the construction of warships for Spain at Madrid's El Cátedra Shipyard in 1798-99 and continued with British shipbuilders such as Vickers-Armstrong and Thornycroft during World War I. The earliest American naval vessels were built at various English dockyards including Portsmouth, Whitehaven, Devonport, Deptford Royal Dockyard and Harwich; but these were transferred to Joint US/British vesselyards along with other military hardware during World War II. During World War II, Japanese navy submarines used yards in California such as Mare Island Naval Arsenal which had been abandoned after Japan's surrender on August 15th 1945. During this time there were also several conversions or rebuilds taking place at both Santa Barbara and Los Angeles NASs under Project Casablanca which involved adding new propulsion systems, air conditioning, radar equipment etc., resulting in some very impressive ships like Task Force 58's Iwo Jima SSN (LST 587) being rebuilt at Yokosuka Marine Engineering Workshops between 1944-45 despite having been torpedoed twice while underway earlier that year. As part of Project Neptune an even moremassive overhaul took place at Long Beach NRDY between 1951-52 which included installation of new superstructure, hangar deck and numerous sonar arrays etc., resulting in one of America's largest amphibious surface combatants - USCGC Philadelphia (LPD 7) . The post-World War II era saw several changes within the US Navy as technology evolved; therefore it is no surprise that when President Ronald Reagan decided to award a contract for a new aircraft carrier - Yorktown - he specifically looked to Newport News Virginiabased General Dynamics Corporation who had built two previous carriers - Enterprise(CVN 78)and Independence(CVN 71). Dominion Ships Incorporated had also recently completed construction on Riverboat Technical Center near Wilmington Delawarewhich would become known as Lockheed Martin's Newport News Shipbuilding facility henceforth.. However it wasn't until September 1974 when Reagan finally awarded a $365 million contract to build four Nimitz class nuclear attack submarines - Calvert Cliffs Naval Laboratory became known as Submarine Base Kings Bay Georgia after then Commandant Admiral James Stockdale announced that their design philosophy would be 'the best sub boat available'. With this order came another significant change within San Leandro Naval Shipyard when Captain Robert Jahn became Superintendent rather than Captain Harry Waters who had held that position since 1978 .. From hereon out many notable warship moves have taken place within our Yard including HMS Queen Elizabeth II becoming operational onboard HMNB Portsmouth following her conversion from an all electric submarine into a diesel powered oceanographic research vessel HMS Challenger in 1998 whilst still serving with NATO member Norway; USS Kitty Hawk becoming operational towards the end stages of Operation Desert Storm following its refit at Charleston South Carolina Coast Guard Station during 1991; HMS Ark Royal making her first voyage off shore patrol waters following her refurbishment from an RFA Flower Class frigate at Faslane Scotland between 1989-90; CVSS 22000 being delivered by hydropower tanker MV Alameda into service alongside DDG 1 Blackthorn off Okinawa Prefecture between 2001-02.. It should be noted that not all contracts are necessarily associated with navies however they do play an important role in maritime history!

The act gave San Leandro exclusive rights to build warships within its city limits for 10 years and provided for annual subsidies amounting to $500,000. After that period expired, ships from any country could be built at the shipyard but only on a case-by-case basis. During World War II, San Leandro became one of several cities in California chosen to participate inthe Manhattan Project because of its significant population and technical expertise in nuclear engineering. The shipyards produced more than 350 vessels for military use during World War II, such as USS Salt Lake City (LHD 9) and USS Denver (DDG-151). In 1951, San Leandro merged with adjacent Oakland into what is now called East Bay Municipal Utility District No. 2 (EBMUD No. 2). At this time, responsibility for all naval shipbuilding activities within EBMUD No. 2 passed from the navy to EBMUD No. 2’s management board which included representatives from both city and navy institutions as well as private industry representatives who were responsible for maintaining yard equipment and production lines while also providing technical assistance to local companies that wished to build warships or submarine modules at their facility.
