San Leandro is a city located in East Bay County, California, United States. The population was 19,362 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Francisco and its metropolitan area. The name of the town derived from Spanish words meaning "sanctuary." The first Europeans to visit what is now San Leandro were members of the Franciscan order who founded Mission San Francisco de Asís on October 17, 1776. The mission was destroyed by a earthquake in 1812 and never rebuilt; however, a small chapel remains that still functions today as a religious center for the Irish Catholic community in East Bay County. In 1853, Ament (1820-1898), an entrepreneur and politician from Stockton born near Lodi, moved to Soquel and started what became known as Ament & Sons grocery store which anchored one of two dueling commercial streetsfronts in downtown San Leandro. In 1865 he merged his business with another local Grocery store owner John Denton to form Denton–Ament Company that would grow into one of America’s leading food retailers until it folded in 1929. Denton was an important figure during early California history because he helped negotiate land sales with Native Americans and negotiated treaties ending hostilities between California's diverse peoples including Anglo settlers and their Native American allies. He also served as mayor of San Francisco from 1892-1894 before moving to Oakland where he formed his own grocerystore dynasty lasting until his death in 1898. His son Melvin joined him soon after at their Oakland Avenue location before becoming co-founder of Safeway Stores Incorporated (laterv Safeway Companies) along with James McMullin who later served as CEO). From humble beginnings Store #1 received its current building permit on April 15th 1947 when City Manager Sam Downing issued permits for 3 buildings on First Street between Market Street & Hwy 101st Avenue; Store #2 followed suit just 1 year later on July 15th 1949 when Manager Downing authorized 4 buildings on Second Street between Market Street & Hwy 101st Avenue - this allowed for future growth across 3 adjoining blocks creating what would become known affectionately as “The Warehouse District” or simply “The district” due to its then prevalence of warehouses/industrial activity throughout much of today’s downtown area including many favorites such as Starbucks Coffee Corporation (now Starbucks Corp.) which opened its doors less than 1 mile away from downtown back then known locally simply as “The Square”! Downtown development accelerated rapidly following these approvals making The Warehouse District by far one of most heavily developed areas eastsideofthe bay beginning around 1950!!! Today there are over 100 businesses operating within walking distance or car ride of downtownSanLeandroandover 250 people employed within close proximitytodowntown& hundreds more students attending nearby universities

When World War II began with Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th 1941, Los Angeles-based business executive Harry Chandler migrated his family to Northern California and founded Chandler Aviation Corporation adjacent to what would become known as Chavez Ravine; he later moved them to Willowbrook Air Force Base near El Sobrante before they finally settled down in Walnut Creek where they started their aviation dynasty--the Wernham Chandler Aviation Company--which continues today with two main branches: one based out of Oakland Airport (Chandler Airlines) and one based out of Menlo Park Airport (Wichita Airlines).
