San Leandro, California is a city located in Contra Costa County, California. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and is adjacent to the cities of Oakland and Berkeley. The first European settlers in what would become San Leandro were Spanish colonists who arrived in 1776. The area now contains parts of two large Alameda rivers: the East Palo Alto River and the West Palo Alto River. In 1853, Captain John Blythe founded a small town called Blytheville on land that would later become part of San Leandro. In 1861, Josefina Sanchez de la Garza established a mission san José de los Dolores near what is now First Street and Third Avenue in downtown San Leandro. In 1865, General Antonio Luna moved his army from Concord to Fort Tejon during the Mexican-American War and began construction on Fort Point at dockside where he named it La Feria (The Fairground). In 1868, Matthias Wesselmann opened what became Wesselmann's Drug Store on Broadway between Second and Third Streets in downtown San Leandro which became an important commercial center for local farmers as well as for sailors aboard shipyards along nearby Hayward Strait. In 1870–71, Wesselmann built aadobe adobe building on lot No 4881 about one mile northwest of present day Masonic Temple Square in downtown San Leandro which served as both his store and residence until 1886 when he sold it to J.B.[1] A year later Wesselmann donated land east of Masonic Temple square to establish Western Addition which today includes much of Central Park South including One Fifth Street between Clayoquot Road (now State Route 280)and Adams Boulevard (now Interstate 880). This donation formed what is now Oakland Hills neighborhood within Greater San leandro boundaries.
