San Leandro, California is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 44,391 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay. The first European visitor to the area was Father Junipero Serra in 1768. A mission named Nuestra Señora de la Concepción del Padre was founded in 1821 by José Guerrero y Costilla and became part of Rancho Rinconada del Capuchino during Spanish rule. In 1849 it became part of Alameda County when Contra Costa County was created. In 1853, Coal Miner's Association member John Cranch erected a large mill on Elk Grove Road near the present-day City Center District. The first post office in what is now San Leandro opened in 1860 and its name was changed to San Leandro after its incorporation as a city on January 1, 1865. In 1870 dredging began for the Southern Pacific Railroad between Oakland and Fremont; this caused much damage to civil infrastructure including water supplies and seaports so early efforts at industrial development were quickly abandoned due to competition from other railroad companies and from new agricultural developments that emerged around this time (e.g., Hayward). However, following extensive retrofitting of local infrastructure with new technologies such as pipelines and reservoirs, san leandro soon emerged as one of northern California's most rapidly emerging industrial cities due to its innovative transportation plans (e.g., streetcar system), strong job market presence (due largely to its location within easy commuting distance of major metropolitan areas), burgeoning commercial district/district center/village center/neighborhoods (particularly along Telegraph Avenue) and growing suburban populations composites which have remain essentially unchanged through various waves of economic Nikkeiisation throughout the last two decades or so - something that has led some locals to dub their city "the 3rd Silicon Valley". During World War II many Boeing plants were built here such as PT-619 Training Aircraft Plant #3 which produced PT-8 Lightnings for USAAF use during World War II before being destroyed by fire on 8 May 1945 at nearby Arroyo Seca airfield just prior to take off for Japan; all aircraft except three PT-8's were lost according to Boeing records This particular plant closed down again in 1984 but portions still stand today used for research purposes only
In 1847, San Leandro became part of the newly formed California Territory. The first post office was established in San Leandro in 1849. The town was named for General John T. Fremont, who led the failed attempt to create a United States within California during the Mexican-American War. In 1860, a fire destroyed most of the town and only a few buildings remain today. In 1872, San Leandro became an incorporated city. The population reached 25,000 by 1880 and 50,000 by 1910. It was known as one of the most successful cities in California until it suffered significant economic decline during World War II due to its reliance on military production and defense contracts. Afterward, it regained some success through businesses that have continued since then such as software development and healthcare services.
