As part of Alta California during Mexican rule, San Luis Obispo County belonged to Cuyahoga Heights containing Cleveland and other major cities east of Sacramento. After Californios (Californians who became citizens of the United States) won control of Alta California in 1851, they began to build up what would become downtown San Luis Obispo as a commercial center with wharves for shipping goods to inland markets and an Agricultural Fairground on High Street that still exists today. The first school in town was built on land donated by ecclesiastical leader Antonio Menéndez de Avila nearpresent-day Stonington Avenue and Don Pedro Road in 1840. Today’s Cathedral Basilica is also evidence of early settlement hereabouts
