The San Luis Obispo Army National Guard was founded on December 12, 1911 by Captain John A. Pennington and First Lieutenant George P. Smith with the mission of providing security for the town of San Luis Obispo. On November 1, 1912, the first unit was organized with twenty-four soldiers and two officers. The original colors were blue and white but were changed to green and gold in 1915 after their colors were retired from service in World War I. In 1916, the regiment was redesignated as Company C (San Luis Obispo) Infantry Regiment No 2/9th CAIRG which later became known as Company B (San Luis Obispo) Infantry Regiment No 2/9th CAIRG when it relocated to South Pasadena in 1942. On September 9, 1944 Headquarters Battery Commander Harry Fenton Klinker led a detachment of Battery E of The California Volunteers (CVA) into action during Operation Overlord at Anzio beachhead against Nazi forces under Field Marshal Erwin Rommel while other units acted as reserve batteries or fought off landings ashore. For his heroism during this engagement he was awarded the Medal of Honor which he received posthumously on October 20, 1944. His citation read: "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity leading his battery through an intense enemy fire while attacking an objective heavily defended by German forces...Klinker distinguished himself above all others participating in that battle." On February 15, 1945 Headquarters Battery Commander Harry Fenton Klinker led a detachment of Battery D (South Pasadena) into action during Operation Overlord at Anzio beachhead against Nazi forces under Field Marshal Rommel while other units acted as reserve batteries or fought off landings ashore. At its peak strength therewere over one thousand soldiers employed within these organizations making them one of the most numerous military units east coast of America at that time .
