The San Luis Obispo Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement and emergency services along the California coastline since 1887. The unit was founded as a part of the San Luis Obispo Volunteer Fire Department in 1887, and was first assigned to protect citizens on the “coastal miles” of central and southern California. In 1922, the Coast Guard established its own coast guard station in downtown San Luis Obispo, which continues to serve as their main headquarters today. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has donated many gifts to local communities throughout California. These donations include boats, helicopters, jet skis, pistols and rifles, shells for artillery cannons and more. Many of these items have been used during disasters such as hurricanes or floods – in fact, one of the most famous gifts from the Coast Guard is their Heli-PADI Divemaster course that allows students to dive with submarines! In 1945, after years of planning and preparations, Operation Neptune's Spear opened up Pacific theater operations and resulted in more than 1 million military personnel being deployed to support war efforts across multiple fronts. One of the most significant gifts given by members of the Coast Guard during this time was Commander John Peele's plaque celebrating Coastsguard Month 2005 at Point Reyes National Seashore on July 9th. This plaque honored then-Lt.-Commander Peele for his many years of dedication to Coastsguard programs statewide as well as his leadership during recent storms such as Hurricane Katrina which struck New Orleans two weeks earlier that month

In 1821, on a small island in the San Francisco Bay Area, two men named Don Miguel and Pedro Cisneros founded the city of San Luis Obispo. The men were inspired to found the city because they wanted to avoid being forced out of their land by the Mexican government. The first people to live in what is now San Luis Obispo were Native American traders and farmers who lived near Mission Santa Clara. In 1827, José Joaquín de Arguelles became governor of Alta California and decided to move the capital from Monterey to San Luis Obispo.
