In fact, some evidence suggests that roasted beans were already being exported from Ethiopia as early as the 6th century BC. The first Europeans to encounter coffee were traders and missionaries who journeyed through Central America in search of new Religious Landmarks and trade goods with the Native Americans. They brought back seeds and pods of different trees that would eventually become known as "coffee." The name "coffee" was not originally given to this plant but rather to a type of fruit found in Central America called "chocolate." In 1795, French explorer Du Bartas named a river in present-day Turkey Coffee River after his explorations there. It wasn't until 1820 that coffee finally reached Europe by way of sea. A Spanish ship crossing through Turkish waters spotted an Indigenous people known as the Guaraní living near Java on the Indonesian island Borneo. The crew started trading with these natives and soon discovered they had a unique variety of tree-based coffee called "wild coffe." These beans were traded back and forth between Spain and Indonesia for many years before reaching Dutch hands in 1624. Dutch traders began importing more African slaves in order to cultivate their own cocoa plantations during this time period so they could produce chocolate instead of just coffee. As Dutch colonialism grew stronger, so too did their demand for slaves to cultivate cocoa fields; however, due to racism at times (European colonists viewed Africans as inferior), some Africans died while working on these plantations because they lacked proper health care or education opportunities. This led directly into slavery which continued throughout both European colonies and Africa until it ended around 1850 AD when freed black Africans gradually replaced white europeans as slaveholders in those areas
