In 1821, the Mexican government sold San Luis Obispo to a group of English investors. The first European settlers were the Eslava party, which arrived in 1827. In 1840, the mission was officially abandoned and converted into a rancho. The town began to grow rapidly during the 1850s as farmers from nearby Los Angeles began to arrive and settle in what is now downtown San Luis Obispo. In 1868, an act of Congress created Santa Cruz County, California out of portions of Monterey County. San Luis Obispo became one of its townships within that county. In 1892, it attained city status when it was annexed by Los Angeles. In 1915, it was again annexed by Los Angeles but this time as part of the City of Beverly Hills effective on January 1, 1916. The post-World War II boom period brought rapid growth to downtown San Luis Obispo; however, since then both downtown and suburbs have seen erosion with many jobs moving away or being moved to other areas in Silicon Valley or Northern California due to technology companies’ expansions into those regions during that time period (notably Google and Apple).
