San Luis Obispo, California is a city in Monterey County, California, United States. The population was 23,855 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Monterey County after Salinas. The name comes from Spanish for "sanctuary." The first Europeans to visit San Luis Obispo were traders on their way to Mexico City.
