The National Guard of San Luis Obispo County was organized on November 3, 1892. At that time, it consisted of 100 men and women who had been ordered by the Governor of California to assist in the defense of the County. The first unit to be organized was Company K, which was made up of 24 women. The Captaincy became a part-time position on October 1, 1893 when it was abolished and its duties were assigned to the Sheriff’s Department. On July 16, 1897, Congress passed an act authorizing the organization of a regiment with 2,000 officers and men for service in Mexico unless called into action within three months. On December 4th this regiment became known as Company A under command of Major General James Wickersham Fenton. On January 6th 1898 battery H (1st) was Organized at Fort Ord with two guns only having been received on December 5th previous year from Colby College in Maine where they had been stored since 1863 while awaiting shipment to Spain as part of the American Expedition against Cuba which failed due to Spanish intervention. A third gun arrived from powder magazine at Monterey on February 7th 1898 just before hostilities commenced between America and Spain over Cuba and it is recorded that “the wildest excitement prevailed throughout town as news reached them [the citizens] that one more cannon would soon be placed among their number” This battery operated continuously until September 1899 when they were disbanded because there being no longer any need for them due to increased troop numbers in California during World War I.

The San Luis Obispo National Guard was founded on December 12, 1892. It is the oldest national guard unit in California. The unit was first organized as the 1st Battalion of the Santa Clara County Militia. The battalion served in various capacities until 1912 when it became part of the newly created 2nd Battalion, Santa Clara County Militia. In 1916, the battalion became part of the 6th Infantry Regiment of the United States Army and fought in World War I. After World War I, the battalion became a detachment of 3rd Infantry Brigade of 7th Infantry Division and fought in Korea and Vietnam. After fighting in both wars, the battalion returned to California and was re-raised as a regiment on October 1, 1960. The regiment served in Desert Storm from 1990-1991 and has been deployed twice since then - most recently to Afghanistan from 2012-2015 as an infantry brigade Combat Team with Headquarters Company (HC) 5th Battalion/15th Infantry Regiment. When not fighting or deployments, members of the regiment enjoy various recreations including tennis, golfing, hiking/climbing and dancing

The City of San Luis Obispo (formerly Spanish Mission Santa Clara) is a large, coastal city in central California. The population was estimated at 203,827 as of the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in California after Los Angeles. It is included in the San Francisco–Oakland–San Jose Metropolitan Statistical Area. The missions that once flourished here – including Monterey and Santa Cruz mission stations – have been supplanted by more recent development and are now obscured by modern architecture. Although founded on October 29, 1769 by Franciscan missionaries Father Junípero Serra and Father Manuel Nieto, San Luis Obispo's first mayor was José Núñez de Balboa who served from 1781 to 1785. However its success as a port quickly led to its growth as an agricultural center with cotton fields and other crops becoming increasingly important throughout the 19th century. In 1853, following Mexican independence from Spain, Mexico granted autonomy to California under the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo which gave sovereignty over all of California east of the Baja Peninsula to the United States. On January 6, 1850, President James K Polk signed into law a bill creating what would become known as the Savethe Bay Company which leased land near Point Conception for whaling operations; however this activity ceased soon afterwards due to high costs associated with whale hunting season). In 1855-1856 American Commodore John Doolittle led an expedition that became famous when he bombed Tokyo's Naval Palace during Japan's tempestuous Nakano period (1857-1858). That same year also saw construction begin on Alvarado Street within what is today downtown San Luis Obispo County courthouse square; this marked both America's largest public works project at that time and also its first attempt at Urban renewal or "urban regeneration." In 1875 local entrepreneur Willi Criollo organized a group made up of citizens interested in developing irrigation canals leading from Saint Marys Valley towards Arroyo Seco and then north through towns like Olancha before ending up near Paso Robles where they built their first canal commissioning company - Compania Canalera de la Ribera del Sacramento - later renamed Agua Caliente et Potable Incorporated (ACPI). This group helped lead to increased civic engagement among San Luis Obispo residents which culminated with incorporation as an incorporated city on November 3rd of that year by Mayor Lorenzo Jara with voting rights restricted only to males over 21 years old. During World War II much effort was put into munitions production here including plutonium production at nearby Livermore National Laboratory; however despite some early successes such as producing dynamite for use against Japanese forces during hostilities there were numerous setbacks including fires starting in munitions factories contaminated with plutonium products resulting in several deaths. After liberation Army soldiers occupying town began displacing native Californians which resulted in increasing tension between newly emerging Latino populations and dominant white AngloSaxon culture culminating in two nights of riots beginning on December 12th 1943 known locally as El Dorado Canyon Uprising when military vehicles drove noncombatants out into canyon without warning or justification creating conditions ripe for violence should fighting occur; these events eventually ended with agreement reached between authorities and community groups allowing officialimilation into society rather than exclusion During World War II entire neighborhoods around Point Conception were destroyed intentionally or unintentionally by USAAF bomb raids attributed primarily causally to incendiary bombs dropped accidentally while conducting air strikes against Japanese targets inside Japan proper instead thereof injuring many civilians bystander effects still being felt today namely extensive cindersHEAP deposits located along shoreline adjacent inland communities suffering similar types scars & possible long term health consequences yellowVictorias Law Enforcement response utilizing helicopters & aircraft providing advanced precision search & rescue capabilities ended up rescuing more people alive THAN ANY OTHER TYPE OF OPERATION CONDUCTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT IN THESE AREAS EVER HAS DID Before SAN LUIS OBISPO POLICE RESPECT FOR HUMAN SAFETY STANDARDS
The first Spanish settlement in San Luis Obispo County was founded by Francisco Pico in 1769. The area now known as San Luis Obispo County was part of Alta California, a province of Mexico, until the Mexican-American War of 1846. In that war, American forces defeated Mexican troops and took control of Alta California. The United States bought Alta California from Mexico in 1848, and San Luis Obispo County became a part of the new United States. In 1853, the county seat moved to Santa Cruz. In 1863, the US Army Corps of Engineers built Fort Guardia on an bluff above Monterey Bay to protect Santa Cruz from Invasion by Japan during World War II. After the war, Fort Guardia became a military base and is still used today for that purpose.
