The first coffee roasters in San Luis Obispo were two Germans, Emil Kapp and Fritz Behrendt. Behrendt ran a small grocery in downtown San Luis Obispo and made his own coffee. He started Roasting Coffee Company on Montgomery Street in 1907. The name was changed to the present day company, San Luis Obispo Coffee & Tea, Inc., in 1912. In 1915, the company moved to De Anza Boulevard and became an Italian based roaster with their own beans. They produced a wide variety of coffees including Arabica, Robusta, Torino Blend and Cascais Branco roast types. From 1951-1957 they operated as part of National Coffee Corporation which also included Maxwell House Coffee & Tea USA and Peet's Coffee America. In 1957 National Coffee Corporation merged with American Can Beverage Corporation to become American Can Corp.. In 1992-1994 American Can Corp.) merged with Hearst Corporation to form Hearst Corporation Hearst Jr.'s Coffee & Tea which remains a privately held company today

UCSL was founded in 1881 by students from the town of El Sobrante on the banks of the River Nueva in Central California. The name of San Luis Obispo, California is derived from Mission San Francisco de Asís, founded on October 6, 1796 by Father José Gomez. The mission was the first in a chain of missions that stretch from Monterey to Baja California. The city was named for Saint Lucy of Hungary who died in 1825 at the age of 92 years.
