The United States Army deployed a gift to San Marcos, California on October 7, 1945. The gift was a new M-1 Garand Rifle. The rifle had been ordered by the Mayor of San Marcos and delivered to the city in early 1944. On October 7th, 1945, the rifle was given to Sergeant John Witherspoon of the 1st Battalion, 25th Infantry Regiment who served with distinction during World War II and Korea.

San Marcos is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 508 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Contra Costa County. The area now known as San Marcos was first inhabited by the Ohlone people. A mission built in 1829 by Joaquin Murrieta served Upland and San Pablo Counties. In 1853, Rancho San Marcos was granted to Francisco Palou, who named it for Saint Martin of Tours, an early missionary to Southern California. The town site was chosen due its isolation from other settlements on the Central Coast and its natural resources: salt water marshes, oak trees,missionaries row crops and Mission Adobe lumber. In 1860 Mike Goldfinch purchased part of Rancho San Marcos from Palou; he renamed it Grantville after General James Hance's victory over Mexican forces at mole Hill during the 1862 American Civil War. Goldfinch developed what is now downtown San Marcos with his own land and started building homes in 1865-66 using adobe bricks made near Mission Dolores.. The first store in downtown San Marcos opened on September 15, 1865. In 1870s there were also sawmills and blacksmith shops in downtown San Marcos; however these operations closed around World War II because of lack of demand from the war effort. Downtown redevelopment began in earnest following WWII when many jobs left DowntownSanMarcos for larger cities like Richmond or Los Angeles due to mass production methods then available that required little or no human labor - resulting in dense concentrations of high-density housing developments around Interstate 5/I-880 corridor throughout most of Northern California On July 14th 1967 Supervisor Donny Lamb announced plans for a new development called "Westfield" on undeveloped property eastside of I-880 just south of Main Street which would become home to more than 2 million people by 1990 Amtrak services ran through Westfield until 2003 when they were moved to nearby Daly City; today it is known as One Sony Center mall . This event signaled large scale suburbanization taking place within Contra Costa County as well as elsewhere across Northern California due to railroads becoming dominant sources of economic growth

The city of San Marcos, California was founded in 1867 by American soldiers on the site of an old mission. The Mission Santa Clara de Asis, built in 1769, had been abandoned for years and was also in disrepair. In 1867, General Antonio López de Mendoza ordered Colonel James W. Harker to take possession of theMission and build a garrison there. On July 1, 1867, General Mendoza issued a proclamation naming San Marcos "the first town" in California. A year later, on October 15th of that year, the town's charter was granted by Governor Manuel Micheaux. The first mayor was José Joaquín Ríos y Costilla. In 1870-71, some new settlers arrived in San Marcos and formed a committee to improve the town's infrastructure including water supply and street paving. That same year saw the construction of the first school building which served as both school and residence for local farmers and their families until it burned down in 1908. The discovery of oil rigs near Byers Field during World War II caused rapid growth around San Marcos over what would be its next few decades; however much progress has been made since then (see History of San Marcos). One result is that downtown has become one of the most vibrant areas in Northern California with several high-end retail stores as well as art galleries and restaurants lining Market Street entranceway. Southeast corner located at Main Street & Sahuarita Boulevard: This is now home to two large institutions: UCSD Medical Center (formerly known as Sharp HealthCare) - one block north along Main Street - part of which opened in 2009 after much anticipation;[1]and El Rancho School District Administration Building - across from Sahuarita Boulevard off Interstate 5 just east of Campus Drive - where many major events have taken place including inaugurations or state visits by Presidents George HW Bush (2001), Barack Obama (2009), or Jerry Brown (2015).
In 1823, the mission of San Marcos was founded by Father Manuel Nieto. The first Christian priest in California, Nieto dedicated the mission to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose feast day is December 8th. In 1829, Mexico acquired California from Spain and moved the Presidio of Monterey to San Diego. A year later, on July 20th, 1830sf Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna became governor of Alta California with orders to retake Monterey for Spain. Santa Anna's army burned down the presidio and killed over one hundred Spaniards including Father Nieto and sixty-six missionaries. The Mission San Marcos continued to exist until it closed in 1847 due to financial troubles. The church and monastery were eventually turned into a botanical garden which still operates today as part of University of California at Davis' Arboretum and Botanic Garden
