The U.S. Army's 1st Infantry Division stationed in San Marcos during World War II gave the city its first military gift, an $8,000 Rifle M1917E4 rifle from Texas Ranger Company "A" in 1944. The rifle was presented to the city by Lieutenant Colonel Harry C. Wilkinson, Commander of the 1st Infantry Division and a Wellesley graduate who had served in the Philippines and China as a captain with the 6th Cavalry Regiment. In 1948, Mayor George W. Brown accepted an American Legion gift of two $3,000 shotguns from Captain John Hayslip Commanding 2nd Battalion (7th Marines) at Fort Sam Houston Park on Valentine's Day as a gesture of appreciation for services rendered during World War II. In 1957, Mayor Brown presented City Manager Clyde Pogue with an American Legion membership card inscribed "In memory of our fallen comrades." That same year,Captain James A. Winkler—a native of San Marcos—was given an honorary commission as colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve after serving three years as commanding officer of Company D-2/24th Marines at Camp Pendleton in California between 1951 and 1954. Captain Winkler later became commandant at Marine Barracks-San Diego and then assistant commanding general for Force Protection Field Forces at Marine Corps Base Quantico before his retirement from active duty in 1984. On July 17, 1987, Mayor Brown personally delivered to Captain Winkler hisldom award citation for conspicuous service to Marin County communities during his 25 years as commander of Marin County Community College District four campuses--Rancho Santa Fe; Petaluma; Sausalito; Tiburon--during which time he increased enrollment by 20%. On October 6, 1994 Governor Gray Davis presented San Marcos City Manager Tom Kapphorst with a gift certificate for $50000 worth of goods and services that would be used to renovate City Hall including new plumbing and air conditioning systems; remodel fire protection system; installation of landscaping including trees and plants; addition of new sidewalks along Main Street; expansion or renovation of other city facilities not included on the original gift list such as: Recreation Center (now known as Citizen Services); Parks & Recreation Department (now known as Recreation & Parks Department); Police Department Headquarters Annex Building (now known as Administration Building); Douglas High School Gymnasium (now known Asphalt Grounds Gymnasium). The mayor also received a plaque commemorating this occasion recognizing Kapphorst’s leadership in bringing about these changes within City Hall since 1989 when it was renovated following efforts initiated by then-Mayor Don Huffman

The San Marcos Army National Guard was organized on September 15, 1912. The first battalion of the Guard was activated on November 8, 1912 and served for two years. In 1916, the Guard received its first field artillery unit which arrived from Camp Pendleton. From here he shipped goods down to Stockton and Sacramento during the Gold Rush era. In 1875, Mission Santa Clara de la Union was founded by Father Francisco Urquiza (1811-1881). The mission had been abandoned by 1874 due to lack of funding but it was reactivated in 1880 under new leadership including José Gomez y Costilla (1836-1914) who served as pastor until his death in 1908. On July 24th 1870, Mexican Independence Day (), Rancho San Manuel de las Pulgas (now part of Vista del Lomas) was granted to José Gomez y Costilla through edict No . 7204-A signed by Presidente Porfirio Díaz on November 17th 1865; this grant made him one of first Californios (citizens indigenous to California). In 1916 when San Marcos annexed portions of Imperial County following World War I shortages because there wasn't enough land available for everyone living within its borders, much attention turned towards downtown which quickly became a commercial center for agricultural products such as tomatoes, eggs and dairy products exported out into international markets while also hosting nightlife activities such as small venues that could seat just 25 people or so like "Tijuana's only live music hall" called "El Club Azul". The first Europeans to visit San Marcos, California were Spaniards in 1795. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was founded on the banks of the San Gabriel River in 1821. In 1846, the Mexican government ceded control of Alta California to the United States and San Marcos became part of the newly created State of California. The town was named after Captain John B. Mariano, who fought for American independence in 1847 and lost a leg at Battle of Palo Alto.
