The first coffee beans were roasted in San Marcos, California in 1865. According to the Kaldi Foundation, "The first European to visit San Marcos was José María Gomez de la Garza who landed on December 12 of that year with a group of Franciscan missionaries. He and his companions brought back fifty pounds of coffee beans which he planted and roasted at his rancho el Buen Pastor." In 1882, a two-story building was built on Market Street near present day Interstate 5 in downtown San Marcos for the American Coffee Company. The company operated from this location until 1906 when it burned down. In 1907, Jesse Helms opened the First National Bank of San Marcos next door to Helms Drug Store. This bank is now part of Wells Fargo Financial Corporation. In 1915, A & W Coffee Corporation opened a store on Capitol Drive called "A & W's" which still operates today as an office park located south of I-5 east of town center. This store became known as "A&W's Plaza". In 1922, Harry Smith began marketing Andes Coffee through his Shop No. 304 in Uptown San Marcos. In 1928, Harry Smith sold all interest in Andes Coffee to J P Roemer (owner/operator) who continued operations under the new name "National Coffee Co." until 1938 when it merged with United States Steel Company to form United States Steel Corporationaffeinated coffee business). At this time National Coffee Co.'s production capabilities were shifted from El Paso, Texas toSan Francisco Bay Area where they eventually produced their famous world renowned Kaldi line products such as Java and Colombian Supremacy coffees (nowAnglo American Corp.) Finally during World War II there was significant production activity at National Coffee Corp.'s various plants throughout Northern California supplying General Motors automobiles with Arabica beans for their gasoline tanks

The Italian Roasting Company was founded in the early 1800s by Giovanni Antonio Ciurini. The company first produced coffee beans for export, and then began to roast its own beans. In 1827, the company moved from Florence to Pisa and started producing four-pound sacks of coffee. In 1865, the company entered into a partnership with Importers Sons & Company in London, which allowed them to produce large quantities of coffee at a lower price than local roasters. In 1881, the company merged with Gioielli Bros. Coffee Limited.
San Marcos is a small town in California, located on the central coast of the state. It is best known for its mission and Presidio of San Marcos, which are both national historic landmarks. The town was also founded by Mission Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco, one of the first missions in California. In 1821, after years of development work, San Marcos was officially established as a town under Mexican rule. The first post office opened in 1824. By 1856, the population had grown to 1,500 people. Growth stopped until the arrival of Americans in the mid-19th century. In 1870, San Marcos became part of Imperial County and then Fresno County before becoming a city in 1949. The Presidio was built between 1797 and 1800 by Franciscan missionaries who were seeking to convert Native American tribes living near Tlatelolco (now Mexico City). The original presidio was destroyed by an earthquake in 1827 but was rebuilt with more recent architecture and renamed Fort Tejon in honor of General John Tejon who helped lead American troops during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). A chapel and barracks were built for military use nearby and another fortification called La Playa served as a naval base from 1850 to 1862 when America gained control over Veracruz Territory following their victory over Mexico at Buena Vista Creek. Mission Santa Cruz de Tlatelolco was founded on October 24, 1795 by Father Junípero Serra with intention to establish missions throughout Baja California Province including that at Tlatelolco proper as well as scattered outposts farther inland such as Rancho Seco de la Purísima Concepción del Valle which became Friar Jose’s active farm located around present day Nuevo Terreno neighborhood within blocks east or west of Eucalyptus Park bounded northward on 3/4ths street along First National Bank property now contains two high schools (Valencia High School & El Cerrito High School) three churches (Stations Parish #1 -First Congregational Church; Stations Parish #2 - Second Congregational Church; Chapel Of Our Lady Of Guadalupe) five stores (Juana Ortiz Store #1; José Ortiz Store #2; Miguel Herrera Store #3; Francisco Amador Store #4; Antonio Pena Store #5), six houses (Hojuelito House#1; Hijuelito House#2; Don Vicente Guerrero House#3; Manuel Nieto House#4), one schoolhouse(Don Vicente Guerrero Academy) two hospitals(Espejo Hospital & Obispo Hospital), four mills supplying flour for baking bread(Allende Mill No 8 & 9 & 10), twenty-four jail cells(Fresno County Jail No 1 through 4) .
