The San Marcos Coast Guard was organized on February 14, 1911. The original name for the Coast Guard was the “Marine Patrol” and it functioned as a frontier security force until 1912 when it became a part of the Regular Army. On July 1, 1916, the Marine Patrol was renamed the Coast Guard and its mission changed from maritime security to preventing smuggling and piracy on California's coastline. In 1941, the Coast Guard acquired its own station in San Marcos as part of Project Neptune. The project aimed to improve communications between naval forces installations along California's coast and coastal towns. In 1951, the Headquarters District Headquarters moved from Monterey to San Marcos and all commands were redesignated as Service Commands with Service Units reporting to them instead of Commanding Officers (COs). On October 15, 1957, Headquarters District Headquarters relocated again to San Marcos when Naval Base Point Loma came under Coast guard jurisdiction. From 1959-1973 all Services were combined into one command known as The United States Coast Guard (USCG) which remained divided into Service Commands until 1984 when they were united under one command once again - USCGfactsheet or USCG

In 1915, the San Marcos Coast Guard was established as a part of the California State Legislature. The first Captains were Charles A. Kapp and John P. Shultz. In 1924, Captain Fenton was appointed and served until 1931 when he became Acting Commissioner. In 1933, Captain Harry Wessels took over as Commissioner and served until 1945 when he became Commander in Chief. During his time as Commander in Chief, the Coast Guard made many advancements such as development of radar technology and introduction of fuel-saving devices to the coast guard fleet. Captain Wessels retired from duty on September 30, 1945 and was succeeded by his second-in-command Commodore Roy J. Bourgeois who served until 1951 when he became Commandant General of the Coast Guard instead of retiring again like Captain Wessels had done previously. From 1951 to 1966, Commodore Roy J. Bourgeois served as Commandant General with two interim periods between 1962 and 1964 due to then Governor Goodwin Liu's decision not to reappoint him to that position because of health concerns which later proved true after Liu's death in 1966). From 1966 until 1972, Commodore Roy J. Bourgeois also served as Deputy Commandant General (DG) for Operations/Director for Investigations (DDG/I). In 1972, Commodore Roy J2 Bourgeois became permanent DG/I effective January 1st following Governor George Deukmejian's appointment to lead all state agencies statewide including the Coast Guard which at this point had been divided into several sections or commands including Patrol Squadron One (PSO1), Service Squadron Two (SS2), Helicopter Squadron One (HS1), Fire Support Squadron Three (FSS3), Communications Squadron Two (CS2), Signal Battalion One (SB1), Military Sealift Unit Twentyfour Five hundred fifty one Sixteen (MSU246516)). After serving concurrently with Deputy Commandant General for Operations/Director for Investigations from 1972 until 1974 under Lieutenant Colonel Tom Collins then Lieutenant Colonel Rick Stroud then Colonel Larry Weingarten before becoming permanently DG/I on January 1st1974 following Governor George Deukmejian's appointment).
San Marcos is a small town in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 4,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Francisco Bay Area. The name "San Marcos" comes from Spanish settlers who called it San Miguel and then San Marcos de la Encinas. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Contra Costa County were Missionaries Daniel Dominguez and José Escobar on December 1, 1769. They named the area Rancho Dominguez y Costilla after Juan Manuel Dominguez y Costilla, Viceroy of New Spain at that time. A second group of Spanish Franciscan missionaries arrived in July 1821 and renamed the mission after Father Junípero Serra: Santa Clara de Asís (or Santa Cruz). Jesuit missions continued to be established throughout most of California until 1848 when they were replaced by Methodist Episcopal missions. In 1853, Mexican land grants were given to various ranchos surrounding present-day San Marcos including Rancho Rinconada which became part of Anglo settlement around 1850; Rancho del Arroyo Seca near present-day Pleasanton; Rancho Nuevo Viejo south of Livermore; and Rancho Loma Linda north of Dublin Hills. In 1861, Camp Pendleton was founded as an Army training ground for enlisted men and their families about 25 miles east of downtown San Marcos by Major General Edwin Forbes Woodson during the American Civil War effort against Mexico. In 1865–68 Ulysses S Grant served as Commanding General at Camp Pendleton before his surrender at Appomattox Court House on April 9th 1865. From 1863 to 1866 Antonio Codresi operated a flour mill in what is now North Park Boulevard near where Interstate 680 meets Interstate 580 outside of town limits northwest of Downtown San Marcos with its own water supply from wells located 3 miles northeast on Old US HWY 101E (now I-580) just outside East Valley Road boundaries within town limits west/northwestof town Limits south/eastof Town Limits jurisdiction was vested with Contra Costa County Commissioners effective January 1st 1870 underOrdinance No 12031 passed November 8th 1861 by Board Of Supervisors consisting Of Mayor George Wessels President James Hynes Vice Mayor John Fenton Commissioner John Buhlstead Trustees Drury Morse And David Starr Udall Together With All Other Interested Party To This Ordinance And Which Was Approved By The Assembly On October 5th 1870 . On December 15th 1860 two brothers named Augustus Sloan came overland from Illinois via Oregon Territory without any buildings or equipment other than some saddles and wagons they had brought along with them including 400 head OF cattle & 11 mules which they started branding “WASTE” beneath the Coachella Mountains west of Indio also branded “SAN MARCOS” Overhead signs reading “VALLEY FOREST FARMS COOPERATIVE” still remain visible today above Highway 99 just east off I-580 exit 221A near Indian Wells Regional Airport 7 miles east off I-680 exit 189B known locally as Browns Valley
The Coast Guard has been providing emergency services since 1790. The Coast Guard's mission is to protect the nation's coasts and maritime resources from peril, by conducting searches for sunken ships, rescuing sailors stranded on shore, and protecting life at sea. In 1922, the Coast Guard was created as an all-volunteer force with a single purpose: to keep our coastlines open to navigation. Today, the Coast Guard employs more than 11,000 men and women who act as stewards of our Nation's coasts and waterways. They provide critical support in multiple areas including search and rescue missions; marine monitoring; law enforcement; environmental protection; public health; and coastal infrastructure rehabilitation. The Coast Guard’s gift history stretches back over two centuries – it began with donations of goods and money to help members in need. In 1847 alone, the Coast Guards contributed $2,500 to various charities. Throughout its history, the Coast Guard has received many gifts from individuals and organizations across America. The first European to set foot in what is today San Marcos was Spain's Father Francisco de Paula y Ortega in 1769. He founded a mission, Nuestra Señora de la Reina Católica (Our Lady of the Queen of Kings), on an site that is now known as Mission Santa Clara. The mission was located near what is now downtown San Marcos and it served as the town's central square until 1821 when it moved to its current location on Commerce Street. In 1850, Mexican nationals, following a U.S. invasion of Mexico, proclaimed themselves the new Mexican Republic and named San Marcos their capital. This event led to increased trade and business activity in the area and also spawned some important local businesses such as Bancroft & Sons tailor shop, Waddell Bros grocery store and Hogg Boot Factory. After Mexican independence from Mexico was gained in 1846, most of San Marcos' economy shifted towards agriculture due to lack of another major city with access to markets for goods exported back home. However, during World War II much industry did take place here including aircraft production athemplement plants operated by Douglas Aircraft Company; tank production at El Cajon Tanks Inc.; shipbuilding at Goodwin Manufacturing Co.; mining operations at Almaden Copper mine; and agricultural production at Rancho Del Diablo Farms Ltd., one of the largest cotton-growing areas in California
The Missions were founded on the San Marcos Peninsula in 1777 by Franciscan missionaries. The peninsula was part of Alta California and was claimed by Spain in 1821. In 1825, Mexico acquired Alta California through the Treaty of Buena Vista, which ended the Mexican-American War. The mission system continued until it was abolished by Governor Manuel Micheltorena in 1834.
