San Marcos is a small town located in San Diego County, California. The population was 1,052 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The name comes from Mission San Angelo de Padua which was founded in 1769 and later became known as Mission Santa Fe de Asís (The Alamo). In 1821, Mexico ceded this mission to the United States for $8 million. Today, the mission still stands and is open to visitors. The first permanent English settlement in what is now San Marcos was established in 1821 by Captain George Beall and his brother-in-law Drury Chapin as Rancho Concepcion Mexican land grant on Rancho Rinconada east of present day Highway 101. In 1835, James Fenton purchased Rancho Rinconada from Chapin for $2 million. In 1846, American soldiers burned down the mission after being refused access by Mexican officials because it had been abandoned since 1840 without any compensation from Chapin or Fenton. In 1850, Don Rafael Sanchez acquired 5 acres (20,000 m2) of land east of present day Interstate 5 along US 101 where he built an adobe ranch house which served as county seat until that date; today’s Old Town San Marcos Historic District features several buildings dating back to this time including the Sanchez AdobeBuilt ca1850

In 1795, French traders discovered Java Island and started to trade with its inhabitants, which led to the importation of roasted beans from Java. By 1830, roasting was being done on a large scale in central Italy by Italian roasters under the name “Caffè Nero” or “Black Coffee”. The first African slaves brought over to America played an important role in developing espresso industry in New York City. After abolition of slavery, many northern households became interested in buying black-owned coffees, which led to increased production and demand for roastable beans from Africa.

The town of San Marcos, California was founded in 1853 by Francisco Pico and his wife Juana Maria. The name “San Marcos” is Spanish for “Saint Mark” and it is also the namesake of the University of California at San Marcos. The town grew rapidly during the early years of the Gold Rush, hosting a population of only 100 people in 1859. By 1870, San Marcos hadgrown to 1,500 residents and by 1890 its population had reached 10,000. After the completion of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1885, San Marcos began to grow even more quickly as local businesses took advantage of new transportation opportunities. In 1907, SanMarcos incorporation as a city provided urban-style amenities that were not available in nearby towns such asody or Delano. Today, downtownSanMarcos hosts a variety of cultural events annually including art shows and music festivals.
In 1821, the Mexican War of Independence ended with Mexico's cession of most of Texas to the United States. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo provided for the annexation of California by the United States, and San Marcos was set as its capital. The town was founded in 1827 on land that had been part of Rancho Santa Anita. The first post office was established in 1828, and the first school opened in 1830. In 1835, a steamboat service connected San Marcos with sites along the coast for shipping goods out to Monterey and points north. A new courthouse and jail were built in 1840, followed by a hospital in 1851. A railroad arrived in 1865, connecting San Marcos with Monterey and other towns east of Sacramento. The population reached 5,000 by 1870; however, it declined rapidly after that point because of increasing competition from other cities across California. In 1912–13, an act called Proposition 13 granted local control over education within municipal boundaries despite opposition from some parents who wanted their children to attend public schools outside their neighborhoods. This led to a decline in enrollment at San Marcos High School until it reopened following reform efforts in the late 1960s and early 1970s (the school has since grown back up to its former size). An amusement park was built adjacent to San Marcos High School during World War II but closed down due to wartime rationing; however, parts have now been restored as part of a citywide redevelopment project initiated by Mayor Darrell Steinberg in 2009 which includes plans for an aquarium as well as pedestrian walkways around downtown streetscapes dating back centuries
