San Marcos is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 33,567 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Contra Costa County after Pleasanton and Vallejo. The name "San Marcos" was given to the town by Captain James Burnett of American Fur Company's Fort Point on San Miguel Creek below today's town site. Burnett named this station for his mentor, San Miguel de Allende, who had been governor of Mexico City when America gained independence from Spain. The first European settler in what is now Contra Costa County was Manuel Nieto of Alamo Plaza in 1846. A year later Francisco Palou of Pescadero founded Rancho Rinconada east of Nimitz Pass on Rinconada Creek near modern-day Martinez. In 1851 John Sutter arrived with his family from Northern California and built Sutter's Fort on Mount Diablo overlooking parts of present-day San Ramon Valley and Half Moon Bay. By 1853 there were over 100 settlers living in what is now Contra Costa County.. In 1854 an act called the Provisional Grand Jury Act provided for elections to be held throughout California; these were conducted using a system known as headcounting which used lists compiled by county assessors to tally the number of free men over 21 years old living within each vote district or township.. An election was held on November 3, 1854 to select a Board of Supervisors; one man out of every four residents qualified to vote.. On January 25, 1860 voters approved Measure M (aka Proposition 1) creating a municipal charter formulating government policies; it also gave citizens that right to join any union formed within nine months thereafter..On May 7th 1860 voters approved another measure (Measure K) authorizing annexation by Sacramento into the new state of California.. This event marked not only enactment but definitive implementation by elected officials leading up to creation as a single municipality encompassing all present-day Contra Costa County with its own police department and fire department

In 1821, San Marcos was founded by Father Francisco Alarcón y Guardia as a small trading post on the banks of the Bexar River. The town quickly grew and in 1836 it became a mission, named Santa Fé de Jesús de la Vega. In 1846, San Marcos become an independent municipality and in 1853 it joined the Mexican Republic. Following the Mexican Revolution, San Marcos seceded from Mexico and became an American protectorate under Governor Pio Pico. On November 16,1865, Ulysses S. Grant approved the annexation of California by the United States after Mexico's president Benito Juárez failed to ratify a document giving this approval. At first San Marcos resisted this decision because they wanted to keep their own government and economy; however they eventually ceded all their rights to US rule and were renamed Fort Worth County in honor of President Grant's donation. The turn of the century saw major changes for San Marcos with new arrivals (primarily Anglo-Americans) coming to town seeking opportunities for agriculture or business expansion. The 1906 earthquake destroyed much of downtown including most of the church and many homes which continue to be occupied by residents today. After reconstruction began in earnest following World War II efforts at modernizing both city government as well as infrastructureSan Marcos experienced some growth but also experienced various types of discrimination which continues to be issues today particularly around housing and employment opportunities During these years there were also several notable events such as when Mayor Harry Smith was elected mayoralty with support from local businesses during his last term before leaving office in order to run for governor; or when Juanita Brown won election as first female member of Congress from Texas’ 21st district after over four decades serving her state Capitol District . The first settlers in San Marcos, California were De Soto and Castilla. The land that is now San Marcos was given to the Spanish by the Mexican government in 1821 as part of the Alta California territory. The first house was built on what is now First Street in 1824. In 1828, a jail and courthouse were built on what is now Second Street. The town started to grow after it was designated a post office in 1832. The first school was built in 1840, and the first store opened in1845. In 1850, San Marcos became an elected town with a mayor and council. In 1870, san marcos incorporated as a city with its own hospital, fire department, library, water system, and streetcar service
