The San Marcos National Guard was established in 1916 as the San Antonio Legion of Honor. The first unit to be activated was Company I, which was organized on October 25, 1916. The main purpose of the Guard at that time was to provide security for military installations and events in the town of San Antonio. In 1917, the Guard became an all-volunteer force with a strength of 153 men. In 1918, the Armistice ended World War I and the Guard was disbanded. The following year saw the activation of Company K, which served until 1921. In 1922, Company L joined the Guard and it would stay active until 1944 when it was disbanded due to World War II. In 1946, there were requests for a national guard unit in San Marcos since there had been some violence between Mexican American soldiers and white citizens dating back to 1915. The City of San Marcos, located in the County of Baja California on the eastern edge of Mexico's Baja Peninsula, was founded by Father José de la Cruz y Escobar on December 25, 1769. The Mission San Francisco de Asís was established in 1783 and became a Jesuit mission after being authorized by King Charles III. The city was first named Pueblo de San Marcos but changed to its current name in 1821 when it was made a part of the newly formed Mexican state of Baja California. At its peak, San Marcos had a population of over 100,000 people and numerous businesses. In 1860, portions of the town were annexed to the new County seat at Tijuana. Today, San Marcos is an agricultural census-town with a population of around 10 thousand people who live chiefly within its historic walls and churches. The history of San Marcos begins with Father José de la Cruz y Escobar who arrived in Baja California in 1769 as part as one of several Jesuits sent to find possession for Isla Santa Catalina which then belonged to missions in Sonora Province. After finding no success he returned home on October 14, 1771 and reported his findings to Father Martín Fernández de Zúñiga who approved his idea for founding a mission near present day Tijuana on December 25th that same year. With only about twenty men under his command Father Cruz set out from La Loma where he had been staying with some supplies before continuing northward along what is now Interstate 15 towards modern day Tijuana. However upon reaching crossroads at Rinconada they received word from their superiors that they were not authorized to establish such an outpost so instead they turned back southbound and continued their march northeast until finally arriving at present day Tijuana late that night on December 26th.(1) Father Jose’s group soon realized there were many difficulties ahead including difficult terrain and hostile natives but determined to try anyway due both to religious reasons (he believed Jesus would help them) as well as political instability which had arisen following Spain’s departure from Mexico six years earlier.(2) After two weeks journey they reached what is now known as Encinal hill where they built their first small chapel(3) . One month later however another group led by priest Fernando Montoya reached them from Mazatlán accompanied by horses carrying provisions.(4) The arrival of these new arrivals caused pandemonium among the locals for fear that this strange 1st generation foreigner would steal their food or worse make war upon them.(5) Nevertheless despite these challenges priests Cruz amd Montoya began preaching Christianity among the indigenous peoples living adjacent to Asís Creek whereupon temporary converts began appearing.(6) A few months later news arrived back home indicating that war between Spain and France was impending so father Cruz decided against returning home rather than put himself into danger(7). He remained behind though eventually converting three more natives into Catholics before dying in 1800 at age 67 years old following two long illnesses.) In 1959, it merged with neighboring Butte County to form Mariposa County; this merger resulted in the creation of what is now known as “San Francisco Bay Area” populated largely by people from Northern California who were born or raised there.
