The city of San Marcos, California was founded on April 15, 1849 by Americans Richard Montgomery and wife Margaret. The original site for the town was an agricultural field near what is now downtown San Marcos. After a few years of development, the town enlarged to include a small riverfront district and began growing rapidly. In 1857 it gained city status. The population of San Marcos reached 30,000 in 1870 and 50,000 by 1880. Growth led to increased housing needs and problems with water supplies and sanitation which continue to this day. In 1906 the city annexed Rancho Bernardo del Rio which provided new land for growth within the limits of the city boundaries. This annexation created more problems as much of Rancho Bernardo del Rio was rural land that did not fall within the limits of either San Marcos or Rancho Santa Margarita townships (the portion annexed by San Marcos). A lawsuit resulted in 1908 when residents in Rancho Santa Margarita challengedSan Marcos’ claim to jurisdiction over them because their land had been within its boundaries since 1849 but they were never given proper title to it. After years of debate, councilwoman Eleanor Holmes Norton became mayor in 1959 and successfully campaigned on creating a "city-within-a-city" concept with plans for job training programs, educationally deprived areas within the city limits, expanded public transportation options including buses into the surrounding area, as well as expanding business opportunities through annexations into other nearby communities such as Carlsbad Caverns National Park

The City of San Marcos was founded in 1849 on the site of what is now South Park. The name, given to the original town by Spanish missionaries, referred to a small cape that juts out into San Marcos Bay. The first permanent resident in San Marcos was José Joaquin Baca, an adobe builder who arrived in 1846. In 1852, the Mexican government granted land to Juan Bautista Alvarado for the purpose of establishing a mission at Point Conception. A year later, construction began on Mission Santa Cruz de la Laguna and soon after Father Francisco Jose Ortega moved his residence there from Mission Concepcion. With growing population and development around it, a number of streets were constructed within the city limits- most notably Paseo de las Flores (now Main Street). In 1860, San Marcos became part of California during the Mexican-American War when Mexico ceded all California except Forchitos to America along with its possessions in Texas and New Mexico. American citizens took up arms against Mexico in order to gain independence from Spain. As American forces advanced through northern California they came into contact with Native Americans who had been living near what is now southpark. On October 15th 1861 American soldiers discovered 150 human heads trapped behind rocks on Misery Mesa which served as one of the primary pretexts for General John CSA’s invasion of California under orders from President Abraham Lincoln seeking annexation by America. Santa Anna reacted quickly by ordering his army to march toward Los Angeles instead of northward towards San Marcos where he thought American forces would be weaker and easier prey for British or Confederate forces positioned nearby. Although outnumbered and outgunned Santa Anna ordered his troops into battle without awaiting orders from higher up; this decision resulted in many Mexicans being killed or captured including two generals leading the assault against San Marcos Ridge which led directly to Alvarado’s death three days later at Battle Of La Hacienda while also resulting in over 100 casualties on American side alone On November 1st 1861 Governor Manuel Micheltorena authorized Captain Edward Porter who commanded Ulysses S Grant’s Division OF cavalry “to effectually suppress any insurrection taking place among our people residing within our limits” which included both Mexican nationals loyal to Mexico as well as native Californians unafraid of United States military might Porter dispatched Colonel George Armstrong Custer covering 6 miles per hour across open ground just outside present day South Park before halting just inside today’s boundaries upon entering today's boundaries Custer encountered no resistance but did suffer 2 dead and 14 wounded before finally withdrawing back inside Ulysses S Grant's lines less than 24 hours later following clashes between Ulysses S Grant's division & Chihuahua County Militia east of present day South Park
In 1846, the Mexican government granted American settlers in San Marcos a charter to form a town. The first post office was established in San Marcos on July 1, 1846. The town consisted of just over fifty residents and had no services such as water or schools. Despite this lack of infrastructure, the town gradually grew in population and began to offer amenities such as grocery stores, clinics, and churches. In 1876, San Marcos became part of the newly formed County of California. The 20th century saw many changes for San Marcos. One significant event occurred when United States Marines landed on November 8, 1944 in order to drive out Japanese forces from southern California. After months of fighting and fierce battles, the Marines were able to remove most of the Japanese forces from the area and turn it into an American city called Camp Pendleton. This moment symbolized America's entry into World War II and helped contribute toSan Marcos' status as an important military base during that time
