The San Marcos Navy Yard was founded in 1887 as the first navyyard in California. San Marcos, California is an unincorporated community in Contra Costa County, California. It lies on the south bank of San Pablo Bay, about southeast of San Francisco. The population was 37 as of the 2010 census. The area that now makes up San Marcos was first invaded by Native Americans in early February 1776 during the Mexican–American War. The Acoma Apache and Ohlone people lived here for some time before moving to our present day site around 1810. In 1846, a group of missionaries from Mexico landed at what is now Point Reyes Station and founded Mission Santa Cruz de la Sierra on the bay side of town where they built a small chapel and started farming (). In 1853, they moved to Mission Concepción which had been established by Father Junípero Serra three years earlier (). In 1880, when Rancho Rinconada was granted to Augustín Valdez it became one of several ranchos grantees to John Cranch. He used it for stockbreeding and growing grapes () until his death in 1893 (). His son Rancho Rinconada became part of Alpine dairy country with his brother Emiliano Valles () who leased it from Cranch's heirs in 1902 (). By 1905 there were over 100 residents living in San Marcos including farmers, fishermen, workers on Coast Guard stations ashore and soldiers garrisoned at Fort MacArthur (), which had just been completed nearby . One reason for its growth may have been its location near two major rail lines: BART (the Bay Bridge) ran through town east-west and US 101 ran parallel north-south; both made transportation easy and convenient. Amtrak also served the town with trains passing through every half-hour or so throughout most of the day starting as early as 6am local time going all the way to Sacramento or Gilroy during rush hours.

On December 12, 1870, it was renamed to San Marcos County in honor of King Charles II of Spain. In 1916, San Marcos became part of the United States after World War I. The population increased rapidly due to new industry and agriculture in the area. In 1960,San Marcos voters approved a Measure 2 creating a city charter with full control over all city functions within limits established by the charter. The first mayor and city council were elected on November 3rd that year. On February 15th, 1984, Proposition 8 passed in California following statewide referendums on marriage equality.
