In the early 1800s, San Marcos was a small town in the Mexican state of Baja California. The town was founded by Spanish settlers in 1797. The first settler to arrive in San Marcos was José de la Garza y Luna. He and his family started a bakery and grocery store on the east banks of the river that later became downtown. By 1825, San Marcos had a population of about 100 people. It was known for its cheese production and for its fishing resources. In 1828, Antonio López de Santa Anna became president of Mexico and decided to move the capital from Mexico City toMexico City’s new city jail which lay at the foot of Mount Canoga Avenue on what is now El Cajon Boulevard near present-day North Park Drive. Santa Anna ordered that all goods carried into or out of Mexico City be transported by mule train overland from Veracruz through Tijuana crossing “the great desert without water,” ending up at Puebla where they were sold before being loaded onto wagons and taken back across the River Tehuantepec to Toluca along with other goods destined for Mexico City. At this time, there were no bridges across the River Tehuantepec so wagonloads of goods would often take days or even weeks to cross; one account reports taking more than sixty days! José de la Garza y Luna built an Iron Bridge over the river in 1829 which allowed passage for wagons carrying goods from Tijuana across to San Marcos without having them unloaded on their way back again. By 1830,San Marcos had become an important commercial center due to its location close to two major rivers and access to trade with both Baja California and Sonora states as well as Central Americavia Carretera Real (present day I-5) The first post office opened in San Marcos in 1830 In 1834 Francisco García established a flour mill here which quickly became one of Texas’ leading flour mills . Garcia also owned land adjacentto Mission Concepción del Valle (near present day University Park) that served as a farmstead until it was developed into what is now Avila Hills Golf Course . In 1840 Santiago Bernal founded Serna Adobe here next doorto Garcia’s flour mill becoming one of Northern California’s earliest citrus crops producing high quality fruit until after World War II when it was replaced by grapefruit Production . In 1850 Don Fernando Aguirre founded Rancho Aguirre Sanchez about 20 miles east of present-site San Marcos along today's Interstate 5 just south of Atwater Village. Here he raised horses, cattle, and pigs for market and sold them back to Castro ranchos north of Bakersfield until 1862 when his death gave rise to a contest for succession between two brothers—Aguirre’s nephew Miguel and Antonio Villarreal y Costilla—which led to Santiago Guerrero becoming interim president of Mexico from 1865 until 1870 during its time as part of United States Oregon Territory; although he never held any government position within that territory or within Mexico proper, he remains recognized as its founder due to his ownership and managementof Rancho Aguirre Sanchez throughout its entire history despite never having visited America himself! The city of San Marcos, California was founded on July 29, 1846 by Mormon immigrants from Utah. The original town site was located on the banks of the now defunct San Gabriel River. The name "San Marcos" is Spanish for "The Fortress." In 1853, a post office was established in what is now downtown San Marcos and it continued to be called that until 1907. In that year, the name of the post office was changed to San Francisco and it continues to be so today. In 1910, San Marcos became part of the newly formed County of Los Angeles and has remained an unincorporated community within that county ever since. On January 1st, 1850 residents of parts of Southern California petitioned US President James K. Polk to establish a new territory comprising all or most of what are now Orange County and Alameda County – including present-day San Marcos. When Mexican president Agustín Manuel López de Santa Anna came into power in1852 he refused to recognize US demands for independence from Spain and instead offered amnesty to any Mexican nationals who could provide evidence they had not participated in rebellion against their government. This offer led some exiles in San Marcos and other parts of southern California to cross the Mexican border into Mexico intent on joining forces with General Antonio López de Santa Anna’s forces opposing Mexican rule back home in Texas. Only a few hundred men made it across the Rio Grande before being intercepted by American troops under Lieutenant Colonel Edward Kearney at Presidio Heights on February 14th, 1855; Kearney estimated that only 10% of those attempting passage were able to make it through alive (Kearney Massacre). As a result of this debacle, many Mexicans turned themselves over to American authorities subsequent thereto including Aguinaldo who subsequently moved his capital from Mexico City back eastward upriver towards Sacramento
