The United States Air Force has been providing air service in San Marino since the early 1920s. The first U.S. military base to be established in the city was Camp Beale, which was used for training fighter pilots during World War I. In 1945, San Marino became a part of the United States of America and the Air Force's primary duty shifted from camp Beale to Randolph AFB on the present-day campus of University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). Over time, many different types and sizes of aircraft have been operated from Randolph AFB: Boeing 747-400ERs, McDonnell Douglas MD-80s, Lockheed L-1011 Starfighters, KC-135 Stratotankers and EA-6B Prowlers. Today's Airmen who fly American Eagle or E-3 Sentry surveillance aircraft support numerous missions around Southern California and beyond. On November 10th, 1941 – just two years after Pearl Harbor – the first attack on Japan took place when five Japanese bombers bombed Hiroshima. This event marked an important turning point in world history as Japan had successfully attacked one of America's most powerful allies; it also demonstrated that aviation could play a critical role in warfighting. In 1946, San Marino became an independent country and the Air Force moved its headquarters from Beale AFB to San Marino Airport on October 1st following enactment of Republic Act No 7031 by President Harry S Truman with a view to strengthening defense against possible aggression from abroad. The airport opened its doors to civilian traffic on October 2nd 1951 while operations at Randolph AFB continued until 1992 when they were transferred to Edwards AFB adjacent to UCLA campus. San Marino is a city in San Diego County, California, United States. The population was 12,241 at the 2010 census. It is part of the San Diego–Tijuana metropolitan area. Together with its sister city of Tijuana, it forms the historical and cultural core of both cities. The site that would become San Marino was first settled by Ohlone people in the late 18th century. In 1846, when Mexico gained independence from Spain, San Marino became part of Mexican territory as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The U.S. annexed it to California in 1850, and on July 14, 1853 – just two days after California's admission as a state – San Marino became one of four communities within what would become known as Imperial Valley (the others were Coachella Valley and Lancaster). In 1901/02, prompted by concerns about water availability and land use in Imperial Valley proper – including agricultural portions now within Baja California Sur – local officials created three town lots: Town lot 1 encompassed most of present-day downtown; Town lot 2 included much of west side along First Street between Harbor Drive and Mission Bay; and Townslot 3 covered much of east side from Santa Fe Avenue to Market Street between First Street and Grandviews Road. Each lot contained up to 640 acres (248 hectares). Today’s boundaries for each town lot are slightly different but all still include parts or all of downtown San Marino (although some bits have been moved around), parts or allof West Side along First Street between Harbor Drive and Mission Bay as well as east side from Santa Fe Avenue to Market Street between First Street and Grandviews Road/Garden Grove Boulevard
