The San Marino Army National Guard is the only active duty military unit in San Marino. The unit was formed on July 14, 1892 as the Infantry Battalion of the United States Volunteers (USV) and became a Regular Army battalion on May 1, 1902. On October 15, 1912 the USV detachment at Santa Clara was re-designated as the 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment Infantry (San Marino Militia). On November 12, 1916 this battalion was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 5th Regiment Infantry (San Marino Militia). On January 1st 1929 these units were again redesignated as the 4th Battalion, 9th Regiment Infantry (USMIL). On July 14, 1892 our Soldiers from San Marino answered to an appeal for service in California by General John C. Fremont of California’s first militia brigade. The Brigade numbered 114 men and allowed for no women or children with them into battle. Our Company D of 3rd Battalion I Cavalry arrived in Sacramento on September 11th and reported to Camp Scott where we relieved Company A at Fort Beecher on October 10th. We then went to Healdsburg where we joined up with Company G of Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer’s column which had marched from Stockton across America to join General Grant’s army near Vicksburg Mississippi. Captain Hocker led his company through thick forest and snowdrifts to Civil War battlefield Sugarloaf Hill under heavy fire from Confederate sharpshooters positioned atop high cliffs just east of town while Companies B & C fought off repeated Confederate charges downwind throughout that bitter day and evening; LtCol Hocker also leading a platoon during two hours long charge against heavily fortified position resulting in successful repulse of Rebel attack; One artilleryman killed outright and three wounded including Capt Hocker himself; Many lifelong friendships were made during this engagement including those between Lieutenants Frank Pritchard (now Commandant Academy), Capt Ransom Sartorius (now Commandant) & myself later commanders of various units in Military History
There is no doubt that the army is one of the most popular and well-recognized institutions in any country. As new technologies emerged during this period (e.g., photography), greater reliance was placed upon them within the Indian Army for documenting operations and preserving records thereof. For example, photographs taken during campaigns at Mount Bagh are still used today by officers studying maps of ancient battlefields in order to improve their understanding of how they may have looked back 100 years ago! By 17th century standards, artillery arms were quite rudimentary compared to those currently fielded by armies across the globe; however, artillerymen did play an important role in battle by providing firepower support for infantry forces fighting alongside other armaments like cavalry and missile weapons (e.g., cannons). In fact, some historians believe that firearms development within Indian Army may have been responsible for later British successes in World War II! It should also be pointed out that even though artillery played an ever more important role during periods such as this one where technology advancements were making large strides forward - cavalry units continued playing an essential role both offensively and defensively - there was never an attempt to disband entire cavalry regiments! In fact, throughout history there has always been a strong sense among leaders within armies that Cavalry should continue playing its traditional role even after firearms become available which allows them valuable contributions both offensively and defensively when called upon!
