The history of the San Marino Army National Guard began in 1881 when a group of soldiers from the Republic of California joined forces with the Regular Army to help fight in the Mexican-American War. AfterWARS, many new soldiers and veterans decided to stay in California and join the San Marino Militia. The Militia was initially called "the Volunteer Legion" but it changed its name to the San Marino Army National Guard on November 1, 1935. The national guard has played an important role in our country ever since and is today one of America's most honorable military organizations. Today, there are over 4,000 members of the San Marino Army National Guard as well as reserve components totaling more than 12,000 troops. The militia participates in a variety of missions critical to our national defense including law enforcement, disaster response, homeland security and training exercises with other units across America. This year marks 100 years since we formed our current organization and I am proud to be able to keep our community safe while we serve our nation!

The San Marino area was part of the Mexican territory of Alta California before it was acquired by the United States in 1848. The small town of San Marino was founded in 1851 by member of the California Gold Rush party, John Sutter. In 1861, when Mexico achieved independence from Spain, San Marino became an independent republic and adopted a U.S. Constitution. The population of San Marino increased rapidly during the days of its republic, reaching 1,500 in 1880 and 5,000 by 1910. However, with World War I looming on the horizon and American support for Spain throughout much of that decade, there wasn't much development took place in San Marino until after World War II due to America's involvement in that conflict. In 1959, Alameda County was formed from a portion of Contra Costa County which had been split between Berkeley and Oakland counties as part of an effort to improve transportation links between those two cities and other parts of the county. As a result of this consolidation decision, San Marinans lost their only access to BART (the Bay Area Rapid Transit) system which had opened up in 1977 just east of their city limits. Unfortunately for these residents, annexation into Contra Costa County has not stopped Measure B from going through since then - one way or another they will continue to be connected to BART at some point even though they're no longer within city boundaries! The first people to live in San Marino were the Etruscan settlers of Veii. The Roman Republic ruled these shores from c. 509 BC until it was conquered by the Roman Empire in 27 BC. The area that is now San Marino was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia until 1815, when it became a separate kingdom under Napoleonic rule. After World War I, Italy regained control over Sardinia and San Marino reverted to its pre-war status as a republic within Italy. In 1946, an international treaty granted San Marino full independence from Italy and it has remained so ever since. In 1861, the city of Ascoli Piceno became the capital of San Marino after being moved from Vibo Valentia. The new capital was designed by Italian architect Luigi Uvarini and features a neoclassical architecture style with elements inspired by French architecture such as Place de la Concorde and Les Halles du Louvre. The first president of San Marino was Giovanni Battista Cuccinelli who served from 1865 to 1870. He was followed by Giorgio Morandi who served for two terms between 1871 and 1875 before becoming Prime Minister in 1880s following the death of his predecessor Carlo Alberto D’Este. From 1886 to 1890, Francesco Crispi served as President before being succeeded by Antonio Vallinari who held office until 1893 when he resigned due to illness. This led to a series of leaders who were not long able to maintain stability because they often lacked support from within their own government or party which made it difficult for them to achieve any major reforms or advancements during their time in office; however, this did not mean that there wasn’t significant progress made either on the local level or internationally despite these challenges because there are many examples where New Statesman-like movements emerged which aimed at reforming bothSan Marinese society and its economy while also seeking closer ties with other countries such as France and Switzerland through diplomatic channels (e.g., Sammarinese National Assembly's efforts towards achieving closer ties with France).
