A post office was established at Terra del Fuego in 1854 and two stores were built before 1850: one on Santa Claus Lane and one on Gherardello Drive NW\. By 1860 there were six residents living in Terra del Fuego - four men farmers who farmed sheep and three women who raised chickens-, five farmers growing crops other than potatoes nearby (four within walking distance), four housewives making butter from raw milk products from their husbands’ fields, nine smallholders growing fruits or vegetables nearby (six onSanta Claus Lane NW., two eastward on Gherardello Drive NW.), eleven market gardeners raising flowers or herbs nearby (nine eastward on State Street SE.), three white men working among these farming families:\ There were also a few haciendas scattered around southern Orange County during this time: Rancho de las Palomas y la Cueva ($5 million worth by 1880) near Newport Beach; Rancho Viejo de los Olivos ($10 million by 1880); La Cañada Flintridge ($12 million by 1890)\ These income-producing farms had high-quality herds that yielded meat that could be used for food or exported to Europe\ Among these ranchos lived wealthy Mexican Americans who bought large parcels Windsor Heights Boulevard SW between Rodeo Drive SW & Sepulveda Boulevard called Rancho Moreno\ In 1916 historian Harry Elmer Barnes published his study An American Frontier Town: SAN MARINO AND ITS AREAS OF INFLUENCE* which described how "the [Rancho Moreno] area . . . had become one of greatest wealth behind closed doors in Southern California." Many social changes took place here during this period including waves ofimmigration from Mexico beginning in 1910 followed shortly thereafter by waves more recent arrivals such as Japanese Americans interned during World War II
The first permanent European settlement in San Marino was founded by the Franciscan friars in 1795. In 1821, the United States acquired it as part of the Treaty of Paris following its victory in the Mexican-American War. The treaty ceded California to Mexico, but San Marino retained its self-governing status until 1959. In 1919, San Marino joined the Italian Republic and became an autonomous province within that country. On 15 December 1990, a referendum on independence from Italy was held and narrowly voted in favor of becoming an independent republic with a unicameral legislature. On 6 May 1998, San Marino became an official member state of the European Union.
