The capital of San Marino is Ascoli Piceno, located on the east coast of the country. In 1969, a new constitution was adopted which guaranteed freedom of speech and assembly, as well as religious freedom. San Marino has an independent judiciary system and its own currency, the sanmarinese lira. It is twinned with France and Switzerland.
