The San Marino Marine Museum is the only museum in California dedicated to maritime history. The museum was founded in 1961 by Captain Edward L. Smith, a naval officer and member of the San Marino Board of Supervisors. The first collection of maritime memorabilia was donated from various sources, including shipwrecks and derelict vessels. In 1967, the San Marino Naval Shipyard opened its doors to the public and began restoration work on several old ships, including the USS Constitution (the first U.S.-made warship) and HMS Guerriero. In 1984, the United States Embassy in Rome donated a collection of vintage American fishing boats to the Museum. The collection now includes over thirty-five boats dating back to 1875. Today, Maritime History Month is celebrated throughout San Marino each year with special events such as a sailing competition hosted at Land’s End Park near where Captain Smith first met his wife Elsie; a display of artifacts from local ports; lectures on maritime history by distinguished visitors; and demonstrations of boat navigation or seamanship techniques by experienced sailors from around the world. San Marino has long been an important stop for travelers on their way between Europe and Asia via the Strait of Gibraltar. Agricultural production includes hay, straw products, vegetables/fruit trees, cattle ranching, and cotton farming; while light industry activities include manufacturing jobs in various industries such as textiles or fabricated metals; as well as services such as electricians or carpenters. Fishing has also been an important aspect of local subsistence since at least early times; one report dating back to 1858 noted that “fishing grounds abound all along [the] river” which allowed aboriginal people access to valuable seafood resources unavailable from other parts of California. San Marino is a small town in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 7,494 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Riverside–Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The tiny town was founded on April 1, 1874 by George P. Shultz and his wife Anna Mclntyre as a commune within the larger community ofOntario (now known as Riverside). In 1907, Shultz donated land to build a high school and other public buildings for San Marino. The town's first mayor was Wm. Dutton Force and its first postmaster was Leland Crouse II. The current name originated with an agreement reached between George P. Shultz and David Lawrence Hallett, president of UCLA, which gave each party an equal share in naming rights for a new football stadium to be built in Ontario Park near Shultz's home; Hallett called it "San Marino" while Shultz said it would be "the prettiest little town I have ever seen." The first European discovery of San Marino was made by the Portuguese in 1514 when they sighted a small island off the coast of southern California. The area now known as San Marino was part of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which became independent from Spain in 1815. In that year, Italy acquired control over Sardinia and San Marino became a protectorate of Italy. Italian troops invaded San Marino in 1944 and 1945 during World War II, but were repelled without loss. After the end of World War II, the United Nations Trusteeship Council awarded San Marino to Italy as part of its trust for post-war reconstruction. On 1 January 1949, the country gained independence from Italy with a declaration by King Vittorio Emanuele III asserting that “San Marino is an independent State within the framework of international law”. The new government began preparations for independence and declared its intention to remain an autonomous state with equal rights and privileges to both France and Switzerland. The Fortresses Act (1949) placed restrictions on French access to land within 2 miles (3 km) of both coasts while Swiss access was unrestricted. On 26 May 1950, Italian Prime Minister Alcide De Gasperi announced his intention to cede sovereignty over all aspects of life inside San Marino to Switzerland under a 1959 treaty signed between De Gasperi and Swiss President Konrad Adenauer.De Gasperi's decision followed monthslong negotiations between De Gasperi's government and Swiss officials at a time when Europe was still recovering from World War II wreckage including Austria-Hungary, Yugoslavia, Finland, Greece etc., some three years after defeat in war had ended hostilities in Europe. Agreement on details on how this would happen took longer because there were continuing differences over what should be done about financial reserves held by both states plus cultural artifacts housed by either nation inside their respective borders which were not openly accessible or amenable for repatriation outside those borders without prior permission from either side - something which has been ongoing ever since although sporadic efforts have been made towards resolution/closure).
