When the United States became a country, it was Congressional directive to create a national guard. The first national guard unit was organized on July 13, 1790. It was made up of nine men and one woman who were paid by Congress to serve out six-month terms in arrears of their pay. The original San Marino National Guard Unit consisted of only male soldiers, who patrolled the town and county borders. On February 15, 1851, the unit was augmented with seven women volunteers from San Marino County as part of an effort to secure peace and order in the county during times of civil unrest. In 1912, California passed a state law authorizing the formation of military units composed entirely of female soldiers for local defense purposes. The first unit constituted under this law was given the name "San Marino Women's Militia." The militia disbanded in 1916 but re-formed in 1924 as the present day National Guard battalion number 1 (NGB 1). There are now over 2,500 active members served by both male and female soldiers within our community! In addition to our regular armed forces there is also an Air National Guard detachment stationed at nearby Big Bear Airport that provides security for events such as festivals or fairs

In 1853, San Marino became part of the United States and was added to the list of U.S. states that had congressional districts drawn by partisan gerrymanders. The first census in 1850 found only 3 people living in San Marino, all of whom were employed in agriculture. By 1870, there were 10 settlers living on the island and 2 businesses had been founded. The population grew steadily until 1910 when it peaked at 20 residents due to World War I and II-related migration (the military stationed on San Marino increased the population). In 1990, as a result of Proposition 209, which sought to reduce voting power for minority groups in California, the population decreased by 5%. The decline is likely due to a combination of factors including increasing income levels for those residing outside of San Marino and an increase indensity on the island as a result of developers purchasing land closer to town.
