In 1855, John Sutter came acrossandering Padres Jurati Indians while exploring northern California searching for goldfields; he named this area after them – Santa Margarita County – but no settlement resulted until 1867 when Colonel James Hahn postulated that Rincon de la Vieja could be reached only by traveling down a route linking Ventura County with Los Angeles County through Blanco Canyon (present day Vallejo). On November 10th 1870 during the American Civil War General Philip Kearny's Second Brigade invadedona Valley looking for supplies near General Antonio López Adobe Walls; they discovered gold hidden under several feet (0.30 meters) of dirt covering an underground stream leading north from Mission Dolores Creek junction northeast to Pico Gordo Hills; General Kearny ordered his soldiers not to loot but instead proceeded to build Fort Centenarian overlooking Pico Gordo Hills where they found 600 pounds (27 kg) (.20 kg), worth $2 per ounce ($25 at current prices), plus other valuable relics including firearms dating back to 1540 AD!
