Small batch coffee has been a popular beverage in San Marino for over sixty years. The first small batch coffee roaster in the town was founded in 1951 by Mr. and Mrs. John Ziegler. They started out roasting three-pound bags of ground beans at their home on Main Street. Over time, they grew the business to encompass a wide variety of sweet and savory coffees, as well as iced coffee drinks. Today, their small batch coffee is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike throughout the county. The history of smallbatch coffee can be traced back to when Mr. Ziegler visited Europe while on vacation in 1949. While he was there, he tasted some of the most delicious espresso he had ever experienced and excitedly brought back samples to share with his wife, who also worked at a restaurant at that time! From this experience, Mrs. Ziegler knew she wanted to start her own café where she could offer her customers unique flavors of espresso from around the world! She opened her first cafe in 1951 and soon realized just how popular small batch coffee would become! Today, San Marino's small batch coffee scene continues to grow with many new businesses opening up each year that continue to bring people together for a cup of sweet or Savory Coffee!

Today's economy revolves around agriculture, healthcare services, education and tourism; but some of what made San Marino an early center for citrus production has also continued to be important: citrus fruits are grown here for juice or fruit salads; cheese is made from cow’s milk; olives are produced; marble is quarried hereabouts; and limestone comes from this area for building materials such as countertops, driveway stones and interior trim

In 1963, San Marino became an independent republic under President Agustín Castilla y Costilla after years of negotiations with Italy over political boundaries following World War II (Lambert 1981). DuringCastilla y Costilla's rule there were several significant advances withinSanMarinostate including enactmentofthe first public school law in California; passageofthefirst statewide income tax;andestablishmentofthestatehouse which would later becometheHallof Government (Mosesworth 1990). These accomplishments madeSanMarinoprovidean important model for subsequent Californian republics such asAlaska and Nevada while helpingtoobtaininternationalrecognitionforSANMarinoamongstothercountries(Cordesman et al 1992; Welsh 1984).
